Via Resource, a recruitment agency, has conducted a survey among 1020 Cyber Security professionals and found that the sector is poised to grow. The majority of respondents were from the US, while 16.8% were from the UK. Out of the surveyed professionals, 35% were working in security engineering and architecture, 27% in governance, risk and compliance, and 21% in network security. The survey explored the changes within the market, candidate behaviour, and candidate requirements for a new role.

According to the survey, Cyber Security jobs are in high demand, however, there is a significant skills gap in the industry. Respondents believe there is an 88% shortfall in talent, which includes cyber security directors, security operations directors and vice presidents of product security in EMEA and North America. The drive to fill the skills gap has led many employers to begin reducing it by hiring women and new graduates, however, it remains a significant challenge.

The survey also found that there are several ways cyber security professionals apply for new roles, with applying on a company website being the most popular channel. 53% of candidates reported finding un-advertised Cyber Security roles where hiring organisations have chosen to be more discreet. Additionally, candidates tend to use their own personal networks and LinkedIn in their job searches.

When it comes to what candidates want from a new role, respondents cited salary, career progression, employee benefits, workplace culture and environment, job responsibilities, and job title, in that order. Salary was deemed the most important factor by candidates when considering a new role. However, the ranking of employee benefits has changed, as a result of COVID-19, providing a flexible working environment and the ability to work from home are now also important factors.

The survey found that candidate expectations have evolved and recruiters should respond accordingly. They should provide feedback regularly, promptly, and provide a good interview experience for candidates, incorporating phone and online interviews with the final stage to be in person interviews. It is also important to provide training and upskilling to existing staff, as well as provide a comprehensive range of employee benefits.

The cyber security industry is now the fastest-growing sector. To be competitive, companies will need to adapt and transform their recruitment practices to meet the evolving needs of both new and existing talent. The burning and continued desire to stay ahead of the ever-changing cyber risk landscape by hiring and retaining niche cyber talent along with outsourcing strategies, as well as supporting existing talent through ongoing training, is essential for organisations to stay agile and optimise operational processes in 2023.
