In a shocking turn of events, ransomware has managed to breach the IT systems of 40 French museums, including the world-famous Louvre. The unsettling incident took place on the night of August 3-4, 2024, catching the attention of the director of information systems at the Grand Palais site.
The director’s keen eye detected unusual activity within the computer systems, prompting immediate action to be taken against what turned out to be a ransomware attack. Ransomware, a type of malicious software designed to encrypt data and make it inaccessible, was at the heart of this cyber assault.
The hackers behind this attack specifically targeted the computer system that oversees financial data for various brands located within the affected museums. Employing a classic ransomware tactic, the attackers demanded payment in cryptocurrencies. Their strategy involved offering to sell the decryption key to the victims while simultaneously threatening to either publish or sell the stolen data if the ransom was not met.
As reported by Le Parisien, the assailants have given the museums a strict 48-hour deadline to make contact, failing which would result in the release of the encrypted data. Such tactics place immense pressure on the victims, as the threat of data exposure carries severe consequences.
In response to this alarming breach, the cybercrime brigade (BL2C) wasted no time launching an investigation into the matter. Their focus primarily lies on the charges of “attack on an automated data processing system, organized extortion, and criminal association to commit a crime or offense punishable by five years’ imprisonment.”
Moreover, the National Cybersecurity Agency of France (ANSSI), responsible for overseeing cybersecurity measures for the Olympic Games, has been notified and is actively providing support in this crisis. ANSSI has assured the public that the incident does not impact the infrastructure involved in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, safeguarding the ongoing operations of these prestigious events.
