Troy Police Investigate Online Scam Stealing Half a Million Dollars from 81-Year-Old Man

TROY, Mich. (FOX 2) – An 81-year-old man in Troy, Michigan fell victim to an online scam that cost him close to half a million dollars. Sgt. Ben Hancock of the Troy Police Department is leading the investigation into the cybercrime that targeted the elderly man.

The scam, which began in October of 2023 and lasted until last month, involved a gold exchange scheme that lured the man into investing a significant amount of money. When the man tried to withdraw some of his earnings in April 2024, he was informed that he needed to pay taxes on his profits. It was then that a family member alerted him to the fact that he was being scammed.

Hancock expressed regret over the situation, stating, “Unfortunately we had an 81-year-old resident of ours who fell victim to a gold exchange scam.” He emphasized the deceptive nature of online investments, noting that even the most cautious individuals can be fooled by seemingly legitimate opportunities.

The Troy police are now working to help the elderly man recover at least some of the $460,000 that he lost. However, Hancock acknowledged that the likelihood of recovering the full amount was slim, given the complexities of investigating cybercrimes.

“Cybercrime is very difficult to investigate,” Hancock explained. “While the case has been assigned to one of our investigators, it is unlikely that this individual will get their money back.”

To prevent falling victim to similar scams, Hancock advised individuals to exercise caution when investing online. He recommended checking the authenticity of email addresses and conducting thorough research on businesses or organizations before committing any funds. Additionally, he encouraged consulting with family members or seeking advice from multiple sources to verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities.

The importance of due diligence and vigilance in the face of online scams cannot be overstated, especially when dealing with significant sums of money. By taking proactive measures to protect themselves, individuals can reduce their risk of becoming victims of financial fraud.

As the investigation into the online scam unfolds, the Troy Police Department remains committed to holding those responsible accountable and raising awareness about the dangers of cybercrime. While the road to justice may be challenging, the pursuit of justice for the elderly man serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding one’s financial assets in an increasingly digital world.
