In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, organizations must fundamentally rethink their approach to defending digital infrastructures. Chris Inglis, a renowned expert in the field and former U.S. National Cyber Director, emphasizes the necessity for deeper collaboration and enhanced resilience through artificial intelligence-enabled security operations. Rather than continuing to rely solely on traditional models of information sharing, Inglis argues that defenders should build coalitions that combine their expertise, resources, and shared objectives to effectively counteract the threats posed by increasingly sophisticated cyber adversaries.

Inglis, who also advises Halcyon, an anti-ransomware company, highlights a crucial trend. He observes that ransomware groups have thrived by fostering collaboration and specialization while rapidly adopting innovative technologies. In contrast, many defenders have been slower to innovate and adapt, leading to vulnerabilities that adversaries exploit. He urges organizations to focus investments not just on technological advancements but also on cultivating a robust resilience capable of maintaining security in the face of persistent threats.

Inglis articulates a compelling vision for future security: “I’d like to make it such that they think twice about coming after a well-defended enterprise.” He elaborates on this vision, explaining that achieving this goal requires a concerted effort to enhance the resilience and robustness of cybersecurity systems. Strengthening the quality of defense mechanisms and fostering coalition-building among various organizations is crucial in creating an environment where cybercriminals recognize the formidable challenge they would face against a united front. This coalition model, as Inglis explains, ensures that any adversary must overcome significant obstacles to penetrate even a single organization within the coalition.

During a recent video interview with Information Security Media Group (ISMG), Inglis shed light on several pivotal points related to cybersecurity strategy. He notably stressed the importance of making resilience and coalition-based defense foundational elements of any effective cybersecurity strategy. He also discussed the role of artificial intelligence, arguing that it should serve to enhance human capabilities rather than replace human agency in decision-making processes. This perspective holds particular significance as organizations increasingly turn to AI to bolster their defenses against ever-evolving cyber threats.

Moreover, Inglis underscored the collaborative responsibility shared between government entities and private industry in combating threats posed by ransomware and nation-state actors. He believes that enhancing collaboration between these sectors is essential to developing a unified response that addresses the complexity and severity of contemporary cybersecurity challenges.

With nearly three decades of experience at the National Security Agency, including eight years as deputy director, Inglis possesses an unparalleled understanding of the cybersecurity landscape. As the first U.S. National Cyber Director from 2021 to 2023, he was instrumental in shaping national cybersecurity policies. He also holds a position on the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity Advisory Council and has contributed to academic advancements in the field by teaching cyber studies at the United States Naval Academy.

As organizations navigate the threats posed by sophisticated cyber adversaries, it is increasingly apparent that a shift towards coalition-based defense and resiliency is no longer optional but imperative. Adopting a forward-thinking approach that integrates innovation with collaboration will be essential in fortifying defenses and maintaining security in the digital realm.
