Renown Health Innovates Digital Identity Management with Advanced Security Measures

Renown Health, a prominent not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving regions in Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and Northeastern California, is taking significant strides to enhance its digital identity management strategy. Under the leadership of Steven Ramirez, the organization’s chief information security and technology officer, Renown Health is implementing cutting-edge technologies, including facial-recognition password resets and self-service access points. This initiative aims to bolster security while reducing friction for clinicians across its network.

During an interview with ISMG at the recent HealthSec conference in Boston, Ramirez emphasized that digital identity remains one of the foremost security challenges within the healthcare sector. As cyber threats evolve and become increasingly sophisticated, healthcare organizations must adapt their identity management frameworks to remain resilient against potential breaches.

The modernization of Renown Health’s identity management system is being driven by several key objectives. First and foremost, the organization seeks to diminish risks associated with identity theft and unauthorized access, thereby improving overall clinician access and enhancing operational efficiency. For instance, the time taken for user access provisioning has been significantly reduced from an average of 20 days to under 24 hours. This remarkable improvement not only streamlines processes but also empowers healthcare professionals to deliver timely care.

A crucial feature of this new identity management strategy is the integration of self-service password resets, bolstered by facial recognition technology. This innovative solution, developed in partnership with platforms like Ping Identity and CLEAR, is expected to dramatically reduce service desk costs. By allowing clinicians to manage their password resets autonomously, the organization minimizes the burden on IT support while enhancing user satisfaction.

Furthermore, Ramirez has laid out plans to transition to a risk-based password model. This approach aims to eliminate the routine requirement for password expirations for users whose credentials demonstrate robust security measures and exhibit no signs of compromise. As he explained, "We’re moving to a risk-based approach so that if your password never pops up in a breach, you don’t have to reset your password. If your password is 16 characters long, you don’t have to reset your password." This policy aligns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines, which identify longer passwords as more secure.

In addition to discussing these advancements, Ramirez explored other critical aspects of digital security. He addressed the management of artificial intelligence (AI) agents and non-human identities, highlighting the need for robust governance controls to prevent potential cybersecurity breaches linked to these technologies. With the growing reliance on AI in various sectors, establishing appropriate oversight becomes crucial to safeguarding sensitive health information.

Moreover, Ramirez pointed out the importance of adopting risk-based security strategies not just as a reactive measure, but as a proactive approach to alleviating operational burdens.
