Ransomware Attacks Surge by 19% in July: A Deep Dive into the Escalating Threat

In a troubling trend for the cybersecurity landscape, ransomware attacks have surged by an alarming 19% in July compared to June, as reported by Comparitech, a renowned consumer service firm specializing in data security analysis. This uptick has particularly affected critical sectors such as finance, technology, and healthcare, emphasizing the vulnerabilities present within these industries.

According to the data provided by Comparitech, a total of 799 ransomware incidents were recorded in July, marking it as the second-highest month for ransomware attacks in 2026. This escalation follows a relative lull observed in April, May, and June, where the frequency of such attacks decreased. Notably, July’s attack numbers stand as the third highest over the past 17 months, painting a stark contrast to earlier months this year.

The finance sector has borne the brunt of this spike, experiencing the most significant month-to-month increase at a staggering rate of 71%. Additionally, the technology industry was not far behind, recording an increase of 62%, while healthcare logged a 46% rise in attacks. Educational institutions also reported a notable 44% increase, underscoring the far-reaching impact of these cyber threats.

Particularly concerning is the rise in ransomware attacks targeting U.S.-based organizations, which surged by 31% in July, a factor that has raised alarms among cybersecurity experts. Among the most consequential incidents highlighted in Comparitech’s analysis was an attack on the U.S. healthcare provider AnMad. This breach resulted in the closure of several of its facilities, emphasizing the disruptive nature of these attacks on critical healthcare services.

Another significant incident involved the Romanian government’s land registry agency, which suffered a catastrophic data breach that led to the wiping of an entire database. The repercussions of this attack extended beyond immediate data loss, significantly disrupting the country’s real estate market and highlighting the potential for ransomware to destabilize vital economic sectors.

Rebecca Moody, the head of data research at Comparitech, provided insight into the evolving nature of these cyber threats. She remarked, “These attacks highlight how ransomware groups hit organizations in various different ways – taking down key systems, stealing troves of data, and even deleting massive datasets.” This statement underscores the necessity for organizations to prioritize robust data backup protocols. “Never has it been more important for organizations to ensure they’re carrying out regular backups (and backups of their backups!) so they can reset systems and restore data as quickly as possible if the worst does happen,” she added, emphasizing the critical role of preparedness in mitigating these threats.

In the broader context of ransomware activity, July saw two prominent groups, The Gentlemen and Qilin, dominate the landscape. Together, they accounted for a staggering 33% of all ransomware attacks during the month. The Gentlemen group emerged as the most active, claiming responsibility for 135 attacks, while Qilin was not far behind with 125 recorded incidents. This ongoing rivalry between The Gentlemen and Qilin highlights a significant power struggle within the ransomware ecosystem.

A separate analysis conducted by ReliaQuest indicated that The Gentlemen group had established itself as the most prolific cyber extortion group from March to May 2026, surpassing Qilin’s previous dominance. The competition between these two ransomware factions illustrates an increasingly aggressive environment where cybercriminals are consistently refining their strategies to outmaneuver one another.

While The Gentlemen and Qilin lead the ranks, several other groups are also contributing to the surge in ransomware incidents. The next most active group was DragonForce with 41 attacks, followed closely by INC (36 incidents), CRPx0 (33), and SafePay (30). This data reflects not only the growing number of actors in the ransomware space but also the escalating complexity of the threats faced by organizations across various sectors.

The findings from Comparitech serve as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats and the profound impact ransomware can have on critical services and sectors. As the frequency and sophistication of attacks continue to rise, it becomes imperative for organizations to bolster their cybersecurity measures and prepare for potential threats. With the stakes this high, the call for enhanced security protocols and vigilant monitoring has never been more pressing. Organizations are urged to act decisively to safeguard their operations and, ultimately, their bottom line.
