Recently, Google announced the release of Chrome version 151.0.7922.108 for Windows and macOS, along with version 151.0.7922.108 tailored for Linux systems. This latest update is significant as it delivers a robust set of 41 security fixes aimed at bolstering the browser’s defenses. These fixes address various elements of Chrome, including rendering capabilities, graphics, JavaScript performance, user interface (UI) interactions, media functionalities, and authentication processes.

The rollout of this Stable channel update began on August 6, with users expected to receive the update progressively over the course of several days and weeks. Through this update, Google aims to ensure that Chrome remains less vulnerable to the myriad of security threats prevalent today.

Critical Vulnerabilities Addressed

Among the notable fixes in this update are solutions to six critical-severity memory-safety vulnerabilities. Of these, five were identified as use-after-free (UAF) bugs, which can impact components such as WebGL, Aura, Skia, and Views. The sixth issue pertains to an out-of-bounds write error in ANGLE, which serves as Chrome’s graphics translation layer. Memory-corruption vulnerabilities, particularly severe in nature, can lead malicious websites or crafted content to cause browser crashes, corrupt data, and in some cases, allow for arbitrary code execution if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Independent assessments reveal that this update successfully resolves more than two dozen memory-safety issues categorized as either critical or high severity. Critical vulnerabilities like CVE-2026-19137 and CVE-2026-19170, both of which are UAF vulnerabilities in WebGL, highlight the potential risks posed by components involved in rendering hardware-accelerated 2D and 3D graphics. Understanding WebGL’s value as a target for cyber attackers is crucial, considering its frequent use in processing graphic-intensive web pages.

The update has also rectified 35 high-severity issues identified in various components. These include serious concerns such as heap buffer overflows found in CrashReporting and Base, along with multiple UAF vulnerabilities in areas such as GPU, HTML, V8 (the JavaScript engine), Media, Extensions, Payments, Web Authentication, and Skia. Furthermore, integer overflow problems found in both GPU and V8 have been addressed.

Special attention deserves to be given to the issues related to V8. Given that this engine processes JavaScript and WebAssembly, the vulnerabilities—ranging from inappropriate implementations to UAF issues and potential out-of-bounds writes—have been meticulously fixed in the latest release. This proactive approach demonstrates Google’s recognition of how critical the integrity of browser scripting engines is to overall browser security.
