Cisco Systems, a leading provider of networking equipment, is witnessing a significant uptick in its sales as organizations hasten to replace outdated devices that are no longer supported. This surge can be attributed to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly the introduction of Anthropic’s Mythos AI model. During the company’s Q4 earnings call, CEO Chuck Robbins highlighted that many major clients are proactively reaching out to Cisco, compelled by the urgency to upgrade their equipment. There is a growing apprehension that continued reliance on outdated devices could pose considerable risks to their production networks, especially with the rising capabilities of AI-powered vulnerability detection.

Robbins has termed this rising trend as "The Mythos Effect." This effect underscores Mythos’s superior ability to identify security flaws, prompting vendors and open-source projects to expedite their patching processes to address AI-discovered vulnerabilities. Consequently, organizations running legacy equipment—which no longer receives crucial updates—are increasingly aware of the threats they face. One notable instance cited by Robbins involved a CEO from a major U.S. manufacturing firm who contacted Cisco to discuss the replacement of devices that had surpassed their support lifecycle. Interestingly, some clients are reallocating funds from their security budgets to expedite these emergency replacements, rather than dipping into conventional networking budgets.

CFO Mark Patterson reassured investors during the earnings call that Cisco is well-prepared to meet the heightened demand for network equipment without encountering significant delays. Robbins also identified the Mythos-influenced refresh cycle as one of three pivotal trends contributing to what he refers to as a "supercycle" in network spending. He forecasts a burgeoning demand from both hyperscalers—large cloud service providers—and enterprises that are discovering their existing network infrastructures are insufficient to handle the advanced workloads necessitated by AI applications.

Cisco’s financial performance for the fiscal year 2026 attests to the company’s robustness, with revenues hitting $63.3 billion—a substantial 12 percent increase from the previous year. Moreover, net income surged by 30 percent to $13.27 billion. Robbins proudly asserted that these numbers reflect the highest revenue, operating margin, and earnings per employee the company has achieved in the last three decades. However, the investor response was mixed. Following the earnings announcement, Cisco’s stock initially rose sharply, only to settle down four percent below its previous close, indicating some volatility in market sentiments.

As organizations grapple with the implications of AI-driven vulnerability discovery, the need for a proactive approach becomes increasingly vital. Companies are urged to conduct thorough audits of their networks, focusing particularly on equipment that has reached the end of its lifecycle.
