This action was publicly announced through a joint statement on Wednesday, highlighting the ongoing vigilance of federal agencies in safeguarding the nation’s critical infrastructure against emerging threats.

The Coast Guard, along with the FBI and other federal security experts, acted promptly in response to indications that the networks of the foreign vessels were compromised while they were navigating through the Gulf of Mexico on their way to Texas. The urgency of the situation stemmed from the potential vulnerabilities linked to advancements in cyber warfare, making oil tankers prime targets for such attacks.

The joint statement emphasized that, as of the date of the announcement, there were no confirmed reports indicating operational disruptions, vessel instability, physical dangers to the crews aboard, or any environmental repercussions stemming from the attacks. The first of the two tankers was boarded on August 21, where agents conducted a thorough security assessment. Reports reveal that the tanker experienced a hacking incident while traversing the Strait of Gibraltar, during which it reportedly lost communication for over 30 hours.
