Black Tech Street, a movement aimed at mobilizing black people nationwide to embrace the tech industry to build wealth and scale their human potential, was featured on this week’s episode of Afternoon Cyber Tea. Tyrance Billingsley, Founder and Executive Director of Black Tech Street, joined Ann Johnson to discuss the critical role of community in the organization, representation in the tech industry, and specific programs and initiatives for security leaders to get involved in to support Black Tech Street.
Through storytelling and program development, Black Tech Street serves as a liaison/coordinator between the Tulsa ecosystem and Black tech-focused opportunities that will help Black Tulsans/Greenwood residents break into the tech workforce or become/thrive as Black tech entrepreneurs. By providing resources and connections, Black Tech Street aims to bridge the gap between the tech industry and underrepresented communities.
During the podcast, Billingsley emphasized the importance of community in Black Tech Street, stating, “We’re a community-based organization that looks to mobilize and galvanize not only Tulsans but folks nationally to embrace the tech industry and build wealth for themselves.” He explained that the organization is focused on building a strong community of individuals who are passionate about technology and inspiring the next generation of tech leaders.
Representation in the tech industry was also discussed during the podcast, with Johnson noting the importance of diversity in the workplace. Billingsley agreed, adding that representation is critical in inspiring the next generation of leaders and that it’s important to see people who look like them in positions of power. He also highlighted the role that Black Tech Street plays in promoting diversity in the industry.
In addition to promoting diversity, Black Tech Street offers specific programs and initiatives for security leaders to get involved in to support the organization. Billingsley discussed the Black Tech Street Fellows Program, which provides paid internships and mentorship opportunities for college students interested in tech careers. He also mentioned Black Tech Fridays, a weekly gathering of individuals interested in technology where participants can network and discuss relevant topics.
Overall, Black Tech Street is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the tech industry and empowering underrepresented communities. Through community-building, program development, and representation, the organization is working to bridge the gap between the tech industry and underrepresented communities, inspiring the next generation of tech leaders, and building wealth for Black people nationwide.
