Ransomware attacks in the United States have continued to rise, with October seeing a significant increase compared to September, according to TechTarget Editorial’s ransomware database. The database tracks publicly disclosed and reported ransomware attacks against U.S. organizations, and it found 35 attacks in October, compared to 21 in September.
The victims of these attacks have come from a range of sectors, including schools, hospitals, an energy supplier, a law office, and an insurance company. This highlights the fact that ransomware attacks can occur in any industry and affect organizations of all sizes.
September saw a record-setting number of ransomware attacks, with a 153% increase compared to the previous year, according to observations by NCC Group. Analysts predicted that this trend would continue, and it seems they were correct.
The consequences of these attacks have been severe for some victims. One example is Akumin Inc., a healthcare organization based in Florida, which reported a ransomware attack on October 24. The attack caused service disruptions, leading to the postponement of clinic and diagnostic operations. It is worth noting that Akumin had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the day before the attack, although it is unclear if there is a connection between the two events.
Morrison Community Hospital in Illinois also experienced a ransomware attack, which resulted in service disruptions. The hospital issued a data breach notification on October 19, stating that the incident occurred on September 24. Although the only data potentially accessed was explanation of benefits information, the incident still affected the hospital’s phone system and internet, leading to disruptions in patient portal capabilities.
Another healthcare organization, Henry Schein Inc., disclosed a cyber attack on October 15 that caused business disruptions. The attack only affected the organization’s manufacturing and distribution business, but it still led to systems being forced offline. Henry Schein notified law enforcement and initiated an investigation with cybersecurity and forensic IT experts.
In addition to healthcare organizations, schools have also been targeted by ransomware groups. The Hopewell Area School District in Pennsylvania confirmed that a ransomware attack caused network disruptions. The attack did not disrupt student devices, but it is still uncertain if student data was affected. The school district has notified law enforcement and is working with outside specialists to investigate the attack.
These examples demonstrate that ransomware attacks continue to be a significant threat to organizations across various industries. They highlight the importance of implementing robust cybersecurity measures and being prepared to respond effectively to such incidents. Organizations must invest in tools and training to detect and mitigate ransomware attacks, as well as regularly backup critical data to minimize the impact of an attack.
It is crucial for organizations to remain vigilant and stay up to date with the latest cybersecurity best practices. Regularly conducting risk assessments and implementing multifactor authentication, strong passwords, and secure network configurations can help protect against ransomware attacks. Additionally, maintaining current backups and regularly testing them can ensure that data can be restored in the event of an attack.
As ransomware attacks continue to pose a threat, organizations must prioritize cybersecurity and take proactive measures to mitigate the risk. By staying informed about the latest trends and employing effective security strategies, organizations can better protect themselves from the devastating consequences of ransomware attacks.
