Researchers from Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence service have reported a surge in conversations related to the illegal use of ChatGPT and other large language models on the Dark Web. According to their findings, these discussions cover a wide range of cybersecurity threats, including the creation of malicious chatbots and fraudulent use of language models. In March 2023, the number of posts related to these topics reached nearly 3,000, indicating a significant increase in interest in these illicit activities.

Furthermore, the researchers also noted that stolen ChatGPT accounts continue to be a sought-after commodity on the Dark Web. Approximately 3,000 posts advertising these accounts for sale were identified, highlighting the ongoing demand for access to these accounts for nefarious purposes.

Alisa Kulishenko, a digital footprint analyst at Kaspersky, expressed concern about the active exploration of various schemes to implement ChatGPT and AI by threat actors. She mentioned that the topics of discussion often revolve around the development of malware and other illegal uses of language models, such as processing stolen user data and parsing files from infected devices.

Additionally, the researchers found that Dark Web groups are sharing prompts to unlock functionalities and collaborating to exploit tools for their own malicious purposes.
