JumpCloud Inc. has released its Q1 2024 small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) IT Trends Report, “State of IT 2024: The Rise of AI, Economic Uncertainty, and Evolving Security Threats,” which takes a deep dive into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on identity management, security challenges, economic uncertainties, and the growing reliance on managed service providers (MSPs) in IT operations.

The report is an updated survey that provides insight into the responses of IT professionals who power and secure SME operations without enterprise-level budgets and staff. This quarter’s survey results were gathered from IT admins in the U.S., U.K., and India and highlight the rapid impact of AI on identity management, while also showcasing significant concerns about the security threats and personal career implications linked to AI deployment.

According to the report, a whopping 76% of organizations agree that they should be investing in AI initiatives, and 79% of IT admins believe that AI will have a net positive effect on their organizations. However, IT teams remain cautious about the potential impact of AI on security and individual careers. 62% of IT admins agree that AI is surpassing their organization’s ability to protect against threats, and 45% express concerns about AI’s impact on their job.

In addition, the report also addresses economic uncertainties, with 57% of organizations having experienced layoffs over the past year and a significant worry among IT professionals that budget cuts will increase organizational risk. This is compounded by increased vendor prices and compliance requirements as well as a shifting device environment, with Windows use down and macOS and Linux use up year-over-year.

Security continues to be a top concern for IT teams, with 56% of IT admins reporting that security is the biggest IT challenge they face. Their biggest concern revolves around network attacks, software vulnerability exploits, and ransomware. Despite these challenges, the adoption of biometrics is on the rise, causing IT professionals to grapple with the balance between added security and a more cumbersome user experience.

Moreover, the report indicates that managed service providers (MSPs) are playing a critical role in SME IT operations, with 76% of SMEs relying on an MSP for certain functions. The top areas where SMEs use MSPs include system security, cloud storage, system monitoring, system management, and managed backup. These findings highlight the growing reliance on MSPs for IT management as SMEs turn to them for a broad range of functions.

Overall, the report underscores the complexity and rapidly evolving nature of IT operations for SMEs, which includes navigating the impacts of AI, economic uncertainties, and security challenges. The full report is available for download and offers essential insights for IT professionals as they seek to navigate these complex dynamics in the evolving technological landscape.
