A recent report by IANS Research and Artico Search has shed light on the dissatisfaction among Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) when it comes to their compensation. The report, titled “The Compensation, Budget and Satisfaction Benchmark for Tech CISOs, 2023–2024,” is based on interviews with nearly 150 CISOs from tech-sector organizations of varying sizes.

According to the findings, roughly a third of CISOs are not happy with their compensation packages. The study revealed that the type of organization and its size play a significant role in determining how much a CISO is compensated. CISOs at publicly listed firms tend to receive the highest compensation, averaging around $1 million, followed by those at VC-backed tech firms who receive approximately $793,000. On the other hand, CISOs working at tech firms where the majority ownership lies with the company’s founder receive the lowest compensation.

The complexity of compensation within different subsectors of the tech industry and the scale of the organization also contribute to variations in pay. The researchers pointed out that larger organizations and more complex roles typically result in higher compensation packages for CISOs. They noted that not all CISO roles in the tech industry are equal, with some being more product-centric and focused on scaling organizations, while others involve managing global teams and multi-million dollar budgets.

One of the key concerns highlighted in the report is the fact that around 31% of CISOs did not receive a pay raise, which has added to their dissatisfaction with their compensation. The researchers attributed this to a slowdown in hiring within the industry. However, the combination of stagnant compensation and the pressure on CISOs to prevent cyberattacks, where they could potentially be held liable, is causing alarm among cybersecurity industry leaders.

The report underscores the importance of addressing the issue of CISO compensation to ensure that cybersecurity professionals are fairly rewarded for their critical role in protecting organizations from cyber threats. As the threat landscape continues to evolve and cyberattacks become more frequent and sophisticated, it is crucial for organizations to recognize the value of their CISOs and provide them with appropriate compensation and support to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

In conclusion, the findings of the report highlight the need for organizations to reevaluate their approach to CISO compensation and ensure that these key cybersecurity leaders are adequately rewarded for their contributions. By addressing the issue of dissatisfaction among CISOs and offering competitive compensation packages, organizations can attract top talent and strengthen their cybersecurity defenses in an increasingly challenging digital environment.
