DDoS Attack Size Surges by 233.33%, UDP-Based Attacks Prevail

The recent Nexusguard DDoS Trend Report for 2024 has shed light on a significant rise in the size of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in 2023, showcasing an average increase of 233.33% compared to the previous year. Although there was a 54.74% decrease in the total number of attacks, the surge in attack size points towards a shift in tactics towards more impactful cyber assaults.

Throughout 2023, the digital realm experienced a wave of DDoS attacks that challenged the traditional understanding of cyber threats. Various industries, from gaming to financial services, fell victim to these attacks, highlighting the widespread risk of DDoS across different sectors. Of particular note was the largest attack recorded, peaking at an extraordinary 700 Gbps, signifying a 93.42% increase from the previous year.

The rise of hacktivism emerged as a driving force behind these attacks, with political motives spurring the targeting of government entities and essential services. This politicization of cyber strategies underscores the convergence of cybersecurity and national security concerns.

In 2023, despite a general decrease in attack frequency, UDP-based attacks remained the most prevalent type, even though they saw a 58.29% year-on-year decline. The simplicity and effectiveness of UDP-based attacks in inundating target networks with packets make them a favored choice among attackers. The Nexusguard report indicates a strategic shift among cybercriminals towards launching fewer but more crippling attacks, opting for quality over quantity to maximize disruption and impact.

An analysis also highlighted the role of multi-vector attack combinations, where attackers employ multiple attack vectors simultaneously to make them harder to defend against. The top three identified multi-vector attack vectors included HTTP Flood and HTTPS Flood, DNS Amplification and UDP Fragmentation, and TCP ACK and UDP Attack, demonstrating the increasing sophistication of DDoS attacks and the need for advanced defense mechanisms.

The report revealed that Pakistan, Brazil, Libya, and the United States were the top countries targeted by Reflected DDoS attacks in 2023, with Pakistan leading significantly followed by Brazil, Libya, and the United States.

Enhanced preparedness against sophisticated DDoS attacks is crucial, with organizations advised to invest in real-time threat intelligence, robust infrastructure resilience, and collaborative defense mechanisms. Public awareness, education, and comprehensive policy frameworks are essential components in combating the evolving threat landscape.

The Nexusguard DDoS Trend Report for 2024 highlights the concerning rise in the size of DDoS attacks despite a decrease in their overall frequency. With UDP-based attacks persisting and complex multi-vector combinations on the rise, a dynamic and adaptive cybersecurity approach is necessary to defend against these disruptive and potentially devastating attacks. As the digital landscape evolves, so must the strategies implemented to safeguard against these cyber threats.
