Spanish police have successfully taken down an illegal media content distribution network that has been operating since 2015, generating a staggering 5.3 million euros in revenue. This network, which distributed audio-visual content illegally, came under the radar following a thorough investigation that began in November 2022. The investigation was initiated after a complaint from the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), a prominent anti-piracy coalition firm.

The crackdown on this illegal media content distribution network was prompted by ACE reporting two websites for infringing intellectual property rights. These websites were hosting the illegal IPTV service known as TVMucho or Teeveeing. According to ACE, these platforms had over 4 million visits in 2023 alone, offering more than 125 channels, including popular networks like BBC, ITV, Sky, and RTL.

During the Spanish police operation, eight individuals were arrested in different locations such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Madrid, Oviedo, and Málaga. Additionally, two home searches were conducted, leading to the seizure of a vehicle, two computers, and the freezing of 80,000 euros in bank accounts. Authorities also blocked 16 web pages associated with the distribution and storage of IPTV content.

Specialists from the Central Cybercrime Unit revealed that a Dutch national was involved in this illegal operation. The websites under scrutiny were found to be registered, controlled, and operated by companies directed by Dutch citizens. The main orchestrator of this criminal network, allegedly a Dutch national, recruited residents of Gran Canaria to pose as a legitimate business structure while engaging in the illegal distribution of copyrighted content.

This illicit organization provided access to over 130 international television channels, as well as a vast library of movies and series to users worldwide. Subscribers were charged between 10 and 19 euros per month, or between 90 and 169 euros annually, depending on their subscription type. The financial impact on authors, producers, and distributors of the pirated content was significant.

In a decisive move, Spanish authorities also seized and blocked the servers of the online platforms involved in the illegal distribution. This enforcement action ensures that users attempting to access these illicit sites are redirected to a National Police website, informing them of the interception of the page.

The crackdown on this illegal media content distribution network signifies a significant victory in the ongoing battle against digital piracy. By disrupting the operations of such a considerable network, Spanish authorities have struck a blow against the illicit distribution of copyrighted content. This operation underscores the importance of international cooperation and advanced investigative techniques in combating cybercrime.

Overall, the dismantling of this illegal media content distribution network serves as a deterrent to those engaging in similar illicit activities. It sends a powerful message that law enforcement agencies are vigilant and committed to protecting intellectual property rights and combating digital piracy.
