In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, the use of cloud technology has become a double-edged sword for organizations. While the cloud offers unparalleled scalability and flexibility, it has also become the prime target for cyberattacks. According to Thales, SaaS applications, cloud storage, and cloud management infrastructure are the top categories of attack, making protecting cloud environments the top security priority for organizations.

The rise in cloud data breaches has been a wake-up call for many organizations, with 44% admitting to experiencing a breach and 14% reporting an incident in the last 12 months. Human error and misconfiguration continue to be the leading causes of these breaches, followed by known vulnerabilities and a lack of multi-factor authentication. As organizations increasingly rely on multiple SaaS applications and store sensitive data in the cloud, the potential attack surface for threat actors continues to grow.

Despite the heightened risks, data encryption rates remain alarmingly low, with less than 10% of enterprises encrypting the majority of their sensitive cloud data. This lack of encryption, coupled with a misunderstanding of the most effective security controls for cloud environments, leaves organizations vulnerable to cyberattacks.

As organizations adapt to the new security challenges posed by cloud computing, many have started to modernize their investments. Digital sovereignty has emerged as a top security concern, prompting organizations to refactor applications and prioritize cloud data protection. Future-proofing cloud environments has become a key driver behind digital sovereignty initiatives, emphasizing the need for organizations to secure their data and ensure compliance with regulations.

Sebastien Cano, SVP for Cloud Protection and Licensing activities at Thales, highlights the importance of addressing cloud security challenges proactively. He emphasizes the need for organizations to have a clear understanding of the data stored in the cloud, the encryption keys used, and who has access to the data. With data sovereignty and privacy topping the list of concerns for IT and security professionals, it is crucial to tackle these challenges head-on.

Thales’ report, based on a survey of nearly 3000 IT and security professionals worldwide, underscores the growing importance of cloud security in the face of increasing cyber threats. As organizations continue to embrace cloud technology, ensuring the security and integrity of their data in the cloud remains paramount. By investing in robust security measures and staying ahead of emerging threats, organizations can protect their cloud environments and safeguard sensitive data from malicious actors.
