Gen™, a global leader in the digital security industry, has recently launched a thought-provoking campaign called Scam Artists to raise awareness about the emotional toll of cybercrime. The campaign utilizes art as a tool to visually depict the impact of cybercrime on individuals, with the aim of educating people on the importance of digital safety.

In collaboration with psychologist Lee Chambers, Gen™ equipped three victims of scams and identity theft with Electroencephalography (EEG) headsets to monitor their brain reactions during and after the attacks. By analyzing their emotional states before, during, and after the incidents, the campaign was able to create creative visuals that illustrate the psychological impact of cybercrime.

The artwork showcased Lynn’s emotional responses to the prompts, highlighting the different stages of emotional turmoil experienced by victims. From relaxation to anxiety and stress, and finally to a sense of relief and psychological well-being after receiving guidance on cyber safety, the visuals vividly portrayed the journey of recovery from a cyberattack.

Lee Chambers, psychologist and well-being expert, emphasized the negative emotional impact of cybercrime on individuals. He explained that the resulting artwork revealed a surge of brain activity associated with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty, which can have lasting effects on one’s life. Chambers also highlighted the concept of optimism bias, where individuals may underestimate the risks of cybercrime due to a false sense of security, emphasizing the importance of being proactive in protecting oneself online.

A recent survey conducted as part of the campaign found that a significant portion of Americans feel vulnerable to cybercrime, with anger and stress being the top emotions experienced by victims of cyberattacks. Despite this, only half of the respondents had some form of cybersecurity solution in place. The survey also indicated that understanding optimism bias could motivate individuals to take cybersecurity measures more seriously.

Leena Elias, Chief Product Officer at Gen™, emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in today’s digital landscape. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated and prevalent, it is crucial for individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves online. Gen™ aims to provide peace of mind to users by offering cutting-edge solutions that safeguard against evolving cyber threats.
