A recent data breach on April 14th of Advance Auto Parts’ IT systems has put current and former job applicants and employees at risk by compromising their personal information. The breach, which was ultimately discovered after an investigation into its nature and scope, has exposed sensitive data such as names, Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, government-issued identification numbers, and dates of birth.
Upon further exploration, it was revealed that the threat actors responsible for the breach had gained unauthorized access to Advance’s Snowflake cloud environment, which is utilized as a cloud storage and data warehousing vendor. Shockingly, the unauthorized access went undetected for over a month until it was finally identified on June 10th, prompting immediate action to be taken.
Law enforcement authorities were quickly notified of the breach and the unauthorized access was promptly terminated. In addition, Advance Auto Parts is going a step further by providing credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian to those impacted by the breach.
