The number of US data breach victims has skyrocketed by more than 1,000% in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year, as per a new analysis of publicly reported data breaches in the country. The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) conducted the analysis and revealed that the surge in victims was primarily due to a few significantly large breaches. Surprisingly, despite the exponential increase in the number of victims, there was actually a 12% decrease in the total number of incidents during this period.
Some of the major breaches that contributed to this surge include the Prudential Financial breach and the Infosys McCamish System leaks, affecting companies like Fidelity and Bank of America, leading to millions of individuals being impacted. The data breach victim count for the first half of 2024 surpassed 1 billion, with 1,078,989,742 victims reported, marking a 490% jump from the same period in 2023, which had 182.6 million victims. It is important to note that these numbers do not include the Change Healthcare breach, which is expected to further add to the tally of US victims.
Eva Velasquez, the President and CEO of ITRC, emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing data and identity protection in light of these alarming statistics.
