Mimecast, a prominent global Human Risk Management platform, recently released its Global Threat Intelligence Report 2024 H1, shedding light on the increasing threats posed by malicious links and AI-driven bots in call centers, particularly impacting small businesses. The report delves deep into the cybersecurity landscape of the first half of 2024, offering valuable insights and practical steps for organizations of all sizes to enhance their cyber defenses.
According to Mimecast’s analysis, the use of malicious links in messaging attacks has seen a significant uptick, with a 133% surge in the first quarter and a 53% increase in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This shift from traditional malware delivery methods to malicious links has made it more challenging for victims to identify and thwart attacks, as attackers employ multiple layers of false information and obfuscation techniques to evade detection.
One notable campaign highlighted in the report targeted Australian law firms by using confusing URLs in email messages to redirect users to fake login pages, demonstrating the advanced tactics employed by threat actors to deceive victims and gain access to sensitive information.
Moreover, the report also sheds light on the emergence of AI-enabled scams, where attackers leverage generative AI to create sophisticated phishing templates. In one instance, corporate employees were targeted with mass emails containing AI-generated PDF documents that led recipients to fake login pages. Additionally, consumers have been increasingly targeted through Microsoft distribution lists, luring them to contact AI bot call centers under the guise of urgent notifications about impending charges or deductions.
Small businesses have been identified as primary targets for cyber threats, with Mimecast’s data showing a peak of 40 threats per user (TPU) in Q1 2024, significantly higher than the threat volume faced by large enterprises. While the overall average number of TPUs decreased slightly from Q4 2023 to Q2 2024, small and medium businesses continue to face a disproportionately high number of threats compared to larger organizations.
Mick Paisley, Chief Security & Resilience Officer at Mimecast, emphasized the importance of optimizing email security to mitigate cyber risks effectively while enhancing organizational productivity and safety. By prioritizing cybersecurity measures and staying vigilant against evolving threats, businesses can safeguard their critical data and collaborative environments from malicious actors.
