In August, ransomware attacks made a significant impact on various sectors, including healthcare, technology, and public-sector organizations, causing disruptions to critical services that lasted for weeks. The healthcare and public sectors in the U.S. were particularly targeted, leading to phone outages, disrupted patient care, and limited services for municipalities.
One of the notable ransomware attacks in August targeted McLaren Health Care on Aug. 5, forcing the Michigan-based healthcare organization to reschedule non-emergency procedures and rely on printed records due to electronic medical records being inaccessible. The attack also affected primary care clinics and cancer care, with McLaren’s network not fully restored until Aug. 27. The incident was claimed last September by the Alphv ransomware gang.
Another significant attack occurred on Aug. 24 when the Port of Seattle revealed a “possible cyberattack” that caused internet outages and disrupted services at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Despite the ongoing disruptions, some services like public Wi-Fi, check-in kiosks, and flight information screens were operating normally for most carriers. However, United Airlines was still facing issues. The responsible ransomware gang behind this attack is yet to be identified.
A global logistics and supply chain company, Jas Worldwide based in Atlanta, also fell victim to a ransomware attack on Aug. 27, affecting its operations and customer services. Although the attack did not disrupt email or website services, it did impact the company’s ability to function. By Aug. 30, Jas had restored its central operations system and essential systems worldwide.
Microchip Technology, a microprocessor manufacturer in Arizona, disclosed on Aug. 17 that it suffered a cyberattack, leading to operational delays and a data breach. The attacker gained unauthorized access to the company’s network, causing disruptions and stealing employee contact details and passwords. Although Microchip did not confirm ransomware involvement, the Play ransomware gang claimed responsibility and threatened to leak stolen data.
The City of Flint, Michigan, faced a ransomware attack on Aug. 15, causing ongoing network and internet outages that impacted services like payment processing, email, and phone access. Despite the disruptions, the city made significant progress with recovery efforts by Aug. 26, restoring key data from backups and implementing enhanced security measures.
Gadsden Independent School District in New Mexico reported a ransomware attack on Aug. 13, affecting normal operations for staff and students, although employee and student data remained secure. The City of Killeen, Texas, also suffered a ransomware attack on Aug. 8, with internal systems temporarily affected and disruptions to utility customer service.
The Sumter County Sherriff’s Office in Florida and the City of North Miami were also victims of ransomware attacks in August, each causing varying levels of disruptions and challenges. These incidents highlight the increasing aggression of ransomware gangs in extorting victims and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to prevent such attacks.
As ransomware threats continue to evolve and target critical sectors, organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their systems and data to mitigate the risks posed by these malicious attacks.
