Partnerships Are Critical for Major Events

Security concerns have become increasingly prevalent in the world of professional sports, with major events being targeted by cyberattacks and terrorism. While the focus has often been on protecting athletes and attendees, partnerships have emerged as a critical component in securing these events.

Reynold Hoover, the CEO of Los Angeles 2028 Olympic & Paralympic Games, highlighted the importance of partnerships in safeguarding major sporting events. He emphasized the need for information sharing across law enforcement and various partners to mitigate cyber threats. The success of the Summer Olympics in Paris, which saw no major disruptive cyberattacks, was attributed to collaborative efforts among stakeholders.

The upcoming Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 are expected to attract millions of visitors, athletes, and broadcasters, presenting a significant security challenge. Hoover stressed the diverse range of threat actors that the committee is preparing for, from amateur hackers to nation-state adversaries.

To address these challenges, the Los Angeles 2028 committee has established partnerships with government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Federal Communications Commission. Hoover emphasized the importance of public-private cooperation and transparent information sharing in safeguarding major sporting events.

“We cannot do it alone,” Hoover stated. “It requires a public-private partnership and open and honest information sharing.” By working collaboratively with various entities, the committee aims to enhance the security posture of the Olympic Games and ensure the safety of participants and spectators.

As threats to major sporting events continue to evolve, partnerships have emerged as a critical defense mechanism. By fostering collaboration and sharing vital information, event organizers can strengthen their security protocols and safeguard against potential cyber threats and attacks. The success of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will rely on the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in ensuring the integrity and safety of the event.
