Europol, in a press release, has announced the successful takedown of the criminal communication platform Ghost in collaboration with law enforcement agencies from nine different countries. This operation led to the arrest of 51 suspects in four countries, including a member of an Italian mafia organization.
The platform, known as Ghost, was a tool used for various criminal activities such as large-scale drug trafficking, violent crimes, money laundering, and other forms of organized crime. Europol stated that Ghost was popular among criminal organizations due to its advanced security features.
Ghost, which had its own infrastructure and applications, was used by thousands of individuals worldwide, with approximately 1,000 messages being sent through the platform each day. The platform utilized three different encryption standards and included an option to delete all messages if needed, allowing criminal networks to communicate securely, evade authorities, counter forensic measures, and coordinate illegal activities across borders.
Access to Ghost was limited to subscribers who purchased modified smartphones for $2,350 each, which included a six-month subscription to the encrypted network and technical support. The alleged mastermind behind Ghost, a 32-year-old Australian, provided regular software updates to the devices, which the Australian Federal Police (AFP) exploited to infiltrate the platform’s communications in Australia.
The takedown of Ghost resulted in preventing harm to individuals, dismantling a drug lab in Australia, seizing illegal weapons and drugs, and recovering approximately one million euros in cash. Europol has indicated that additional arrests related to this case are anticipated in the near future.
Law enforcement authorities have previously used hacking techniques to disrupt criminal networks, similar to the operations against EncroChat, Sky ECC, and ANoM. Catherine De Bolle, Executive Director of Europol, emphasized the collective efforts to prevent criminal networks from evading justice, even if they believe they are secure and unobserved.
This recent operation demonstrates the continued commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat organized crime and ensure the safety of communities. By leveraging technology and international cooperation, authorities can disrupt the activities of criminal networks and hold individuals accountable for their illicit actions.
