The Cyberabad police commissionerate in Hyderabad has seen a significant increase in crime rates, particularly in the realm of cybercrimes. According to the annual report released by Cyberabad commissioner Avinash Mohanty, there has been a 64% rise in overall crime, with cybercrimes accounting for 32% of total cases. One alarming statistic is the staggering 917% jump in the amount lost by individuals in cybercrimes, from Rs 77.92 crore in 2022 to Rs 793.18 crore in 2024 until Nov 30.
Mohanty attributed the surge in the crime rate to the diligent registration of every complaint as an FIR, ensuring thorough investigations for all cases. Looking ahead to 2025, he outlined the focus areas for the Cyberabad police, which include combating cybercrime, economic offenses, and enhancing traffic and road safety measures.
Efforts to tackle drug trafficking have also been successful, aligning with the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on narcotics. This crackdown has led to a drastic reduction in drug supply within the commissionerate, Mohanty stated.
In a bid to improve traffic conditions, particularly in the bustling IT corridor, the Cyberabad police have identified waterlogging points and are collaborating with various departments such as GHMC and HMDA to expedite infrastructure work. The completion of these projects is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and enable smoother traffic flow in the region.
Recognizing the need for enhanced law enforcement infrastructure, the Cyberabad police have proposed the establishment of new law and order, traffic, cybercrime, and women police stations in the commissionerate, which are currently under review by the government. Additionally, the jurisdiction for handling cybercrime cases has been revised, with complaints involving Rs 1.5 lakh and above now falling under the purview of the cybercrime wing.
Moreover, the economic offenses wing (EOW) of the Cyberabad police has initiated asset attachment proceedings to hold perpetrators accountable. Previously, asset attachment was limited to specific provisions, but under new criminal laws, it can now be applied in economic offenses as well, benefitting victims who have been promised substantial returns.
To raise awareness about cybercrimes and other pertinent issues, the Cyberabad police have engaged social media influencers to disseminate information. However, influencers have been cautioned against promoting illicit activities like online betting and gaming.
As cybercrimes continue to pose a significant threat, Mohanty emphasized the importance of public awareness and urged greater vigilance among citizens. By implementing these measures and staying proactive, the Cyberabad police are striving to create a safer and more secure environment for residents in the region.
