The cybersecurity industry mourns the loss of Tenable Holdings, Inc.’s Chairman and CEO, Amit Yoran, who passed away on January 3, 2025, after battling cancer. Yoran, a well-respected figure in the cybersecurity field, was 54 years old and had a career that spanned over two decades.

Known for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to enhancing digital security, Yoran took on the role of CEO at Tenable in 2016. Under his guidance, the company experienced significant growth, culminating in a successful initial public offering (IPO) in 2018.

During his time at Tenable, Yoran focused on driving innovation and positioning the company as a global leader in exposure management. His impact extended beyond the organization, leaving a lasting legacy in the cybersecurity community. Art Coviello, Tenable’s lead independent director, lauded Yoran for his strategic vision and dedication to cybersecurity, stating that his influence will continue to shape the company’s future endeavors.

Prior to his tenure at Tenable, Yoran held key positions, including President of RSA Security and founding CEO of NetWitness. His extensive experience and strategic insights propelled Tenable to the forefront of the cybersecurity landscape, where the company developed cutting-edge solutions to combat evolving threats.

Following Yoran’s passing, Tenable announced a leadership transition. In light of his medical leave of absence starting on December 5, 2024, the Board appointed Steve Vintz, CFO, and Mark Thurmond, COO, as Co-CEOs to provide stability and continuity. The Board will begin a search for a permanent CEO, considering candidates from both internal and external sources, while Art Coviello assumes the role of Chairman of the Board.

Despite the changes in leadership, Tenable remains financially sound, with preliminary results indicating that the company is on track to meet or exceed its financial targets for the fourth quarter of 2024 and the full year. The organization expressed its deepest condolences to Yoran’s family and acknowledged the profound loss felt by his loved ones and the entire company.

As Tenable continues its mission to address cybersecurity challenges and protect organizations worldwide, Amit Yoran’s legacy serves as a guiding light. He is survived by his family, friends, and a grateful cybersecurity community that will forever remember his contributions to the industry.

Funeral arrangements for Yoran have yet to be announced, but his impact on the cybersecurity world will be felt for years to come. As the industry moves forward, Amit Yoran’s legacy will serve as a reminder of the importance of visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to digital security.
