Machine learning and generative AI are revolutionizing the way knowledge workers perform their tasks. Companies across various industries are striving to become “AI companies,” but concerns surrounding AI as a black box and potential security, regulatory, and privacy risks often impede innovation. Executives face immense pressure to invest in AI solutions and demonstrate a return on investment (ROI), yet the lack of proper guidelines and tools to navigate the process without legal or compliance hurdles can be challenging.

In numerous meetings with C-suite executives, board directors, and security teams, a clear dichotomy has emerged regarding the adoption of AI. On one side, there are the “gas” proponents—business and tech leaders eager to embrace AI technologies. On the other side, there are the “brakes” advocates—security, legal, compliance, and governance teams who prioritize risk mitigation. While it may initially appear that being a “brake” is negative, both perspectives hold significance. Just like driving a car, having brakes is essential for safety and control, even though it may slow you down at times. The balance between these two mindsets is crucial for making informed decisions that drive innovation without complications.

To navigate these complex waters, enterprise security leaders can follow key pieces of advice. Understanding the real risks associated with AI implementation is paramount for security, legal, and governance teams. Instead of getting overwhelmed by all potential risks, companies should focus on identifying relevant risks specific to their AI use cases, such as access control issues, data quality concerns, and data lineage gaps. Collaboration between the “gas” and “brakes” camps is essential to align on the most pertinent risk scenarios and mitigate them effectively.

For the “gas” proponents to gain the support of the “brakes” advocates, a customer-centric approach is recommended. Establishing service-level objectives (SLOs) and fostering proactive communication aligned with business priorities can facilitate the approval process for AI use cases. Decision-making should not be based on rigid security standards of the past but should instead align with organizational goals and risk tolerance levels.

Conversely, the “brakes” teams can engage the “gas” proponents by aligning themselves with the overarching mission and vision of the company. By framing security and compliance conversations in a way that resonates with business objectives, such as improving operational reliability or customer service, security professionals can garner support from tech and business leaders. Leveraging third-party assessments and staying informed about industry innovations can further strengthen the case for adopting robust security measures and compliance frameworks.

When embarking on AI initiatives, starting small with well-defined use cases and a comprehensive security framework is essential. Engaging the business stakeholders from the outset to identify relevant problems that AI can solve and categorizing risks associated with different AI components are critical steps. Despite the challenges, industries such as healthcare and financial services are witnessing significant benefits from AI adoption, making it imperative for companies to unite the “gas” and “brakes” camps to drive successful AI implementations.

In conclusion, striking a balance between innovation and risk management is key to leveraging the full potential of AI technologies. By fostering collaboration and communication between different stakeholders, companies can navigate the complexities of AI adoption and drive sustainable growth and success in the evolving digital landscape.
