Microsoft uncovers macOS vulnerability CVE-2024-44243, bypassing SIP

A critical macOS vulnerability, known as CVE-2024-44243, was recently discovered by Microsoft Threat Intelligence, raising concerns about the security of Apple devices. This vulnerability allows attackers to bypass Apple’s System Integrity Protection (SIP), posing a significant threat to the security of macOS systems.

The flaw resides in the Storage Kit daemon, enabling local attackers with root privileges to exploit low-complexity attacks. CVE-2024-44243 takes advantage of a weakness in the macOS storage management system, utilizing the “storagekitd” daemon to load third-party kernel extensions and circumvent the strict controls imposed by SIP.

By bypassing SIP, attackers can install malicious software at the kernel level, gaining deep access to the system and sensitive data. This can lead to the establishment of a persistent presence on the system, making it challenging to remove and potentially facilitating future attacks. Additionally, attackers could bypass Apple’s privacy framework, TCC, allowing unauthorized access to user data and escalating their privileges on the system.

To mitigate the threat posed by CVE-2024-44243, Apple has released security updates that all macOS users should apply to patch the vulnerability. Microsoft’s responsible disclosure of the vulnerability to Apple underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing cybersecurity threats and safeguarding user security.

While patching vulnerabilities is essential in protecting against cyberattacks, it is crucial to remain vigilant against social engineering scams. A recent campaign targeting Apple iOS and Android users with fake trading apps serves as a reminder of the prevalence of such threats in the digital landscape. Jason Soroko, a Senior Fellow at Sectigo, emphasized the need for security teams to ensure macOS systems are patched with the latest updates, monitor for unusual disk management or privileged process behavior, and implement endpoint detection tools that can detect unsigned kernel extensions. Regular integrity checks, adherence to the principle of least privilege, and strict compliance with Apple’s security guidelines are essential measures to reduce exposure to this critical vulnerability.

In conclusion, the discovery of CVE-2024-44243 highlights the ongoing challenges in securing macOS systems against evolving cyber threats.
