A recent security warning issued by India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has shed light on a critical vulnerability in Google Chrome that could potentially allow hackers to take control of users’ computers. This alarming discovery has prompted urgent action from Chrome users to update their browser to the latest version in order to protect their systems from potential cyber attacks.

The identified vulnerabilities in Chrome versions before 133.0.6943.53 for Linux and 133.0.6943.53/54 for Windows and Mac have raised serious concerns about the safety of users’ personal and financial data. Hackers could exploit these flaws by luring unsuspecting users to malicious websites, leading to unauthorized access to their devices and the possibility of data theft or system crashes.

The security advisory issued by CERT-In, identified as CIVN-2025-0014, has pointed out specific security flaws within Chrome related to “Use-after-free” issues in Skia and V8, along with an improper implementation in the Extensions API. These vulnerabilities open up loopholes that cybercriminals can exploit to execute harmful commands on users’ computers, posing a significant threat to their online security.

Hackers can leverage these vulnerabilities by enticing users to visit specially crafted malicious websites designed to run harmful code remotely once accessed. This intrusive tactic could result in devastating consequences such as data theft, system instability, or complete loss of control over the affected device, highlighting the urgent need for users to update their Chrome browser immediately.

Google has already released patches to address these security vulnerabilities, urging users to update their Chrome browser to version 133.0.6943.53/54 or later to ensure protection against potential cyber threats. To initiate the update process, users are advised to follow simple steps within the browser, including checking for updates via the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, navigating to Help > About Google Chrome, and allowing Chrome to automatically update if a new version is available.

The significance of keeping software updated cannot be overstated, especially in today’s digital landscape where cybercriminals constantly target outdated systems for exploitation. Failure to stay up-to-date with software patches and security fixes can leave users vulnerable to cyber attacks, jeopardizing their sensitive information and financial assets. This recent security warning serves as a stark reminder of the importance of timely updates in safeguarding against potential security threats.

In conclusion, if you are a Chrome user, it is crucial to prioritize updating your browser to the latest version to mitigate the risks associated with the identified vulnerabilities. Your online safety hinges on proactive measures to secure your digital environment from malicious actors seeking to compromise your data and system integrity. Stay vigilant, stay updated, and protect your online presence from potential cyber threats.
