In a recent video by Help Net Security, Bart Koek, the Field CTO at Immuta, delves into the key findings of their 2025 State of Data Security Report, shedding light on the emerging challenges faced by IT and data security leaders. The report brings to focus several crucial takeaways that highlight the current landscape of data security and the hurdles that organizations are grappling with.

One of the significant revelations from the report is the impact of GenAI on change management. It is reported that 64% of data leaders are encountering difficulties in granting authorized users timely and secure access to data. This challenge underscores the evolving nature of data security and the need for organizations to adapt to the changing landscape brought about by technological advancements.

Furthermore, the adoption of AI in organizations has not only brought about advancements but has also amplified security risks and complexities in compliance. Fifty-five percent of respondents expressed their concerns regarding the inadequacy of their data security strategies in keeping pace with the rapid evolution of AI. This indicates a pressing need for organizations to reassess and strengthen their security measures to align with the advancements in technology.

Despite the persistent challenges in the realm of data security, there have been notable improvements in reporting and addressing threats. Thirty-seven percent of respondents mentioned that the time taken to access data after requesting it has decreased, with a notable 7% improvement from the previous year’s findings. Moreover, two-thirds of data leaders believe that their ability to protect data has enhanced compared to the previous year, reflecting a positive trend in the proactive handling of data security threats.

However, as the demands for data continue to escalate, leaders are facing a conundrum in striking a balance between data security and access, which is impeding business impact. While seven out of 10 data leaders have reported an increase in their data security budget, over half of the respondents have rated the impact of data access barriers on their organization’s ability to achieve business objectives at 4 out of 5. This juxtaposition underscores the critical need for organizations to streamline their data security measures without compromising on data accessibility for driving business success.

In conclusion, the 2025 State of Data Security Report paints a comprehensive picture of the challenges faced by organizations in safeguarding their data assets and adapting to the evolving technological landscape. It underscores the urgent need for data security leaders to fortify their strategies, enhance compliance measures, and strike a delicate balance between security and accessibility to propel their organizations towards achieving business objectives in an increasingly data-driven world.
