A recent consumer pulse survey conducted by Malwarebytes has shed light on the lack of trust and optimism surrounding ChatGPT, an advanced language model powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The survey, which aimed to gauge public sentiment towards ChatGPT, revealed deep reservations and concerns among respondents.

According to the findings, a mere 10% of those surveyed expressed trust in the information produced by ChatGPT, while a staggering 63% disagreed. Similarly, when asked about the accuracy of ChatGPT-generated information, only 12% agreed that it was accurate, with 55% disagreeing.

However, the survey went beyond trust and accuracy to uncover potential safety and security risks associated with ChatGPT. An overwhelming 81% of respondents believed that ChatGPT could pose a risk in these areas. In fact, 52% of those surveyed called for a pause on ChatGPT developments to allow regulations to catch up, echoing the concerns of prominent figures in the tech industry.

Despite considerable media coverage and online conversations surrounding ChatGPT, the survey revealed that only 35% of respondents claimed to be familiar with the technology. This figure is significantly lower than the 50% who reported being unfamiliar with ChatGPT.

Among those who claimed familiarity with ChatGPT, the survey unearthed several key concerns. For instance, 81% expressed worries about possible security and safety risks, while an alarming 63% stated that they distrust the information produced by ChatGPT. Additionally, more than half (51%) questioned whether AI tools like ChatGPT can actually improve internet safety. This lack of confidence in the technology has resulted in 52% of respondents advocating for a temporary halt in ChatGPT developments until regulations can be established.

Malwarebytes, a global leader in real-time cyber protection, has been using machine learning and AI technologies for years to enhance efficiency and improve various technologies. However, the unique concerns surrounding ChatGPT have perturbed many. Mark Stockley, Cybersecurity Evangelist at Malwarebytes, highlighted the distinct nature of ChatGPT’s mistrust, attributing it to the mysterious workings of the technology. Stockley noted that while specific, narrow AI applications have enjoyed success without raising skepticism, ChatGPT seems to elicit a different response from the public.

The pulse survey was conducted by Malwarebytes among its newsletter readers worldwide using the Alchemer Survey platform. Over 1,400 individuals responded to the survey between May 29 and May 31, 2023.
