Microsoft Enhances Teams with New Bot Identification Feature to Boost Meeting Security

In an effort to bolster security within its Teams application, Microsoft has announced plans to introduce a new feature aimed at meeting administrators. This feature will provide a mechanism for identifying and controlling third-party bots that attempt to join online meetings. Scheduled to begin rolling out in May 2026, this enhancement will be available across multiple platforms, including Desktop, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

The integration comes at a time when the threat posed by malicious bots is increasingly concerning. While bots that are integrated into a company’s internal tools—like those used for transcription and note-taking—are generally perceived as lower-risk, the same cannot be said for external bots. Cybercriminals have exploited these technologies to compromise business communications, hijack conversations, and steal sensitive information.

Security firm Thales highlighted a growing trend where AI tools are becoming more accessible. This has facilitated the creation and deployment of malicious bots, which, alarmingly, account for approximately 37% of all internet traffic. As such, the need for enhanced oversight has never been more urgent. The bot identification feature that Microsoft plans to roll out is a direct response to these escalating security risks.

According to Microsoft, during Teams meetings, if a third-party bot attempts to join, meeting organizers will receive a clear representation of the bot while it waits in the lobby. This level of visibility is crucial for maintaining the integrity and security of virtual meetings. Organizers will not only be able to see which bots are waiting to enter but will also be required to explicitly and separately admit these external bots into the meeting, should they deem it necessary. This stringent admission process is designed to prevent any accidental acceptance of unauthorized bots, giving organizers complete control over who or what joins their meetings.

The new bot identification feature is a proactive measure that underscores Microsoft’s commitment to ensuring a safer online environment for businesses. The escalating prevalence of automated traffic—much of which is driven by bots, both benign and malicious—was noted in a recent report by Cloudflare. Their findings indicate that a large share of internet activity is automated and includes various requests classified as bot-driven.
