The Punjab Police has taken a significant step towards tackling cybercrime by establishing a cutting-edge cybercrime center equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to track criminal activities and solve cases related to online scams. The integrated system of policing will allow for more efficient monitoring and investigation of cybercrimes in the region.
In addition to setting up the cybercrime center, the police have also installed over 300 cameras in the city and near the International Border with Pakistan. These cameras are designed to detect the number plates of vehicles used by criminals, providing valuable information for investigations and crime prevention efforts.
The launch of the center was marked by an inauguration ceremony presided over by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav at the Division No. 1 police station. This new facility, known as the Police Command and Control Centre, houses a Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), a modern interrogation center, and a social media unit. These tools will enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in Punjab to effectively combat cybercrime.
The CCTNS is a sophisticated online platform developed by the Union government to support law enforcement agencies in their efforts to fight crime using information technology. The center is headed by a DSP-rank officer and staffed by individuals with a background in technical education, ensuring that the team is well-equipped to handle the complex nature of cybercrimes.
Residents who fall victim to online scams or cybercrimes now have a direct line of communication with law enforcement through the Police Command and Control Centre. They can report incidents by contacting the police station or calling the designated number 1930 for assistance. This streamlined process makes it easier for affected individuals to seek help and for the police to respond promptly to reports of cybercrimes.
Furthermore, the police have made the public aware of the online portal where cybercrimes can be reported, encouraging transparency and public participation in combating cybercriminal activities. The use of technology, such as auto number plate reader (ANPR) cameras, is a key component of the police’s strategy to enhance surveillance and security in the region.
The installation of ANPR cameras in the city and near the International Border will help capture any suspicious movements and provide valuable data for ongoing investigations. These cameras are capable of capturing number plate images and converting them into alphanumeric characters, allowing the police to cross-check them with a database of registered vehicles. This advanced technology will significantly bolster the police’s efforts to track and apprehend criminals involved in illegal activities.
Overall, the establishment of the cybercrime center and the deployment of advanced surveillance technology demonstrate the Punjab Police’s commitment to enhancing public safety and combating cybercriminal activities. With these new tools and resources at their disposal, law enforcement agencies in Punjab are better equipped to address the evolving challenges posed by cybercrimes and ensure a safer environment for residents across the region.
