They have converted an abandoned police station into a state-of-the-art coaching and guidance center, as well as a library. This new facility serves as a resource for local youth, aiding them in their preparations for competitive examinations that could significantly shape their futures.
Located about 220 kilometers from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, the old police station building in Karmatand has undergone a substantial renovation to become a hi-tech educational space. According to a police representative, the newly established center is equipped with modern amenities, including Wi-Fi, a projector, and various other facilities designed to enhance the learning experience for students. This initiative marks a pioneering step, as it is reportedly the first police station to be repurposed into an educational institution.
Dr. Ehtesham Waquarib, the Superintendent of Police in Jamtara, spoke about the rationale behind this creative endeavor. Following the construction of a new police station, the former building was left vacant. Recognizing the importance of educational resources for local students, the police decided to convert it into a coaching and guidance center. Dr. Waquarib emphasized the role of Karmatand in the legacy of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a prominent social reformer and advocate for women’s education, who dedicated 18 years of his life in the area. Given its historical significance, the initiative aims to reclaim Karmatand’s past glory by providing educational opportunities to its youth.
With a high number of capable students residing in Karmatand, the police believe that the coaching and guidance center will serve as a vital resource for those aspirants. Dr. Waquarib reiterated that the goal is to provide consistent guidance through weekly and monthly sessions led by experienced teachers, focusing on the various competitive examinations that can pave the way for better job prospects.
Among those hopeful for the center’s impact is Sandeep Kumar, an arts graduate currently preparing for competitive exams. He expressed optimism about how this initiative could transform students’ lives and career paths. The local administration has already been active in pursuing educational goals; around four years ago, they initiated a ‘library movement’ aimed at converting abandoned or dilapidated government buildings into community libraries across 118 panchayats within the district. This effort was designed to engage youth in diverse educational activities, fostering a culture of learning in the community.
In 2022, the police and district administration came together to launch a campaign titled “Police ki Pathshala.” This collaborative effort is aimed at raising awareness among young people about the dangers associated with phishing and other cybercrimes the area is known for, while also encouraging them to take part in community development activities. The integration of educational initiatives with community safety measures highlights a comprehensive approach to tackling both educational and social issues in Jamtara.
