As healthcare organizations continue to grapple with cybersecurity challenges, Chris Tyberg, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Abbott, a leading medical device and consumer health product manufacturer, sees great potential in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to address resource shortages in the industry.

In a recent interview, Tyberg highlighted the opportunities presented by emerging AI technologies, especially generative AI, in enhancing cybersecurity response capabilities. He emphasized the need to harness these tools to accelerate response times and improve scalability in addressing cyber threats.

The use of AI holds particular promise in mitigating workforce shortages, particularly among smaller and rural healthcare providers. Tyberg expressed his belief that technologies like gen AI can play a crucial role in enabling more efficient threat detection and response mechanisms within the healthcare sector.

During the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society 2025 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, Tyberg shared his insights with Information Security Media Group. He underscored the importance of adopting AI solutions to bolster cybersecurity defenses and navigate the evolving threat landscape effectively.

In the interview, Tyberg also discussed the concerns surrounding the potential misuse of gen AI by cybercriminals. He outlined key components of the Health Sector Coordinating Council’s (HSCC) strategic five-year plan aimed at enhancing cybersecurity resilience within the healthcare industry.

With his extensive experience in information security and risk management spanning over two decades, Tyberg brings a wealth of expertise to his role at Abbott. Prior to joining Abbott, he served as the CISO at St. Jude Medical, where he oversaw both enterprise and product security functions. Tyberg’s background also includes a tenure at Ernst & Young, where he specialized in information security and risk practices.

As healthcare organizations grapple with a myriad of cybersecurity challenges, including data breaches, ransomware attacks, and regulatory compliance requirements, the role of AI in fortifying defenses and improving incident response capabilities cannot be overstated. By harnessing the power of AI technologies like generative AI, organizations can enhance their cybersecurity posture and better safeguard sensitive patient data from evolving threats.

Looking ahead, as the healthcare sector continues to embrace digital transformation and innovative technologies, the proactive adoption of AI-driven solutions will be instrumental in strengthening cybersecurity resilience and safeguarding patient trust. Through strategic initiatives and collaboration with industry stakeholders, healthcare organizations can effectively leverage AI to address cybersecurity resource shortages and bolster their defenses against sophisticated cyber threats.
