In a startling revelation, the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) has reported that over two-thirds of organizations encountered cybersecurity incidents involving AI agents in the past year. This finding, a product of collaborative research with Token Security, underscores the growing concerns surrounding the unchecked deployment of AI technology within corporate networks. These AI agents, running without sufficient oversight, have been identified as the culprits behind data exposure, operational disruptions, and financial losses.

The CSA’s comprehensive study, titled Autonomous but Not Controlled: AI Agent Incidents Now Common in Enterprises, was published on April 21. It emphasizes that a significant majority of businesses currently lack strategies for decommissioning AI agents, further exacerbating their susceptibility to cybersecurity threats. This lack of preparedness poses serious questions about the control organizations maintain over their data environments.

Despite 68% of survey respondents expressing confidence in their visibility of AI agents, the study indicates a paradox: 82% of respondents disclosed encountering previously unknown agents at least once in the past year. The report identifies internal automation environments and large language model (LLM) platforms as the primary locations where these unrecognized AI agents were found.

The discrepancy between operational visibility and effective governance raises critical concerns about the reliability of control models that depend on known agents. As the CSA report points out, if cybersecurity and infrastructure teams remain unaware of the AI agents that employees have deployed, ensuring their secure operation becomes almost impossible. This oversight has led to numerous cybersecurity incidents, showcasing the urgent need for heightened awareness and control within organizations.

The Fallout from AI Agent Deployments

The repercussions of incidents involving AI agents have been broad and severe. The CSA study reveals that 65% of organizations experienced at least one cybersecurity incident related to their use of AI agents within the last year. The consequences of these incidents manifested in various forms: 61% of organizations faced data exposure, 43% encountered operational disruptions, and 41% reported unintended actions affecting business processes. Financial losses were highlighted by 35% of organizations, while 31% experienced service delays in customer-facing or internal operations.

The CSA’s findings emphasize that incidents involving AI agents are now significantly impacting essential enterprise functions, including data protection, operational continuity, financial performance, and service delivery. Consequently, businesses are urged to perform thorough risk assessments and implement robust controls regarding AI agents. The report insists that the governance of AI agents must shift from a mere technical oversight issue to a pivotal aspect of business risk management. Organizations must integrate agent behavior into comprehensive security, compliance, and operational resilience strategies rather than treating them as isolated challenges.

Governance and Decommissioning: Critical Gaps Identified

A particularly troubling aspect of AI agent management is the apparent lack of governance concerning their decommissioning. The CSA’s research indicates that only 20% of organizations have established formal processes for safely decommissioning AI agents. This oversight means that AI agents may remain active within the network, continuing to hold onto credentials, permissions, or operational hooks, even after their intended purpose has been fulfilled. The potential for these ‘forgotten agents’ to contribute to data leaks or breaches presents a significant risk to organizational security.

The CSA report warns that as the reliance on AI agents grows within enterprise networks, the issue of unmanaged agents retaining permissions could lead to catastrophic cybersecurity failures.

Call to Action from the Cloud Security Alliance

In light of these alarming findings, the CSA has issued a clarion call for organizations to prioritize the management of security and risk associated with AI agents.

Hillary Baron, the assistant vice president of research at CSA, states, “AI agent security and governance encompass an interconnected system spanning visibility, lifecycle management, policy, and monitoring. While foundational controls are in place, gaps in consistency and end-of-life management remain.” Baron emphasizes that as AI agents become increasingly autonomous, the governance of these entities must transition into a more holistic, operational model that can effectively maintain control at scale.

To mitigate these risks, the CSA recommends several proactive measures for organizations:

  1. Maintain Visibility Across AI Agents: Ensure that AI agents operating across software-as-a-service platforms, internal systems, and LLM environments are properly identified and incorporated within governance protocols.

  2. Define and Document Agent Purpose: Establish clear objectives for each AI agent to set functional boundaries and align access rights accordingly.

  3. Apply Lifecycle Governance Consistently: Extend oversight procedures—including onboarding, ownership, review, and decommissioning—across the entire agent lifecycle.

  4. Evaluate Actions Based on Risk and Authorization: Implement contextual signals such as action risk and explicit human approvals to inform decision-making related to AI agent activities.

  5. Align Monitoring with Agent Activity: Transition from sporadic oversight to more continuous and event-driven detection models for improved awareness and control.

  6. Incorporate Agents into Enterprise Risk Models: Treat AI agents as integral components of overarching security, compliance, and operational resilience frameworks to ensure a cohesive approach.

These recommendations aim to bolster the governance and security of AI agents, ensuring that organizations can harness the advantages of this technology without exposing themselves to undue risk. The Cloud Security Alliance’s research illustrates the pressing need for organizations to re-evaluate their strategies regarding AI deployment and management, lest they fall prey to the very technologies they seek to leverage.
