In a recent survey conducted by Action1, it has become evident that the anticipated impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation on IT and security workflows has not materialized as expected. Two years ago, system administrators expressed optimism about the transformative potential of AI in their roles. However, according to the latest findings from Action1’s report, titled Action1 2026 Survey Report: AI Impact on Sysadmins, released on July 30, 2026, the reality paints a starkly different picture.
The survey, which gathered insights from over 1,000 system administrators worldwide, reveals that the adoption of AI tools across various significant categories is far below the earlier predictions made by these professionals. Specifically, the report highlights substantial discrepancies between what administrators envisioned for 2024 and the current state of AI implementation.
Among the most notable gaps illustrated in the report, metrics on patch management optimization showed a remarkable difference: 67% of respondents had predicted full automation would be achieved by 2026, yet only a mere 16% report that this has been implemented to date. In the realm of server CPU and memory monitoring, the expectations were 70% for full automation, contrasted with only 20% actual implementation. Similarly, for vulnerability prioritization, the initial prediction was 66%, while now only 17% of sysadmins have managed to put such measures in place. The trends continued with incident detection and remediation (67% predicted versus 19% achieved) and compliance analysis (62% predicted versus 28% achieved). Log analysis showcased one of the broader gaps as well, with an expectation of 83% automation leading to just 50% realization in practice.
Despite this underwhelming progress, Gene Moody, the field CTO at Action1, contends that the situation is not indicative of a lack of interest in AI but rather reflects a more cautious and discerning approach to its integration. He argues that system administrators are gradually becoming comfortable using AI to analyze information, streamline processes, and suggest actionable recommendations. Nevertheless, they remain acutely aware that erroneous decisions regarding critical areas such as production systems, vulnerabilities, or access controls can lead to serious repercussions. Consequently, Moody emphasizes that the emerging model leans towards "supervised AI," wherein seasoned administrators retain the authority to make significant decisions, thereby balancing the benefits of automation with the necessity for human oversight.
The report also indicates a positive trend in some aspects of AI adoption. For instance, nearly half of the surveyed system administrators (47%) reported using AI for troubleshooting purposes, although primarily in contexts of generating hypotheses and recommendations rather than in fully autonomous resolutions, which aligns closely with the predicted figure of 52% from 2024. Furthermore, as organizations become increasingly reliant on AI, the proportion of businesses mandating AI usage has seen substantial growth, soaring from 15% in 2023 to 34% by 2026.
Moreover, the understanding of AI integration among system administrators has improved significantly. Over half (58%) of sysadmins now feel equipped to incorporate AI into their workflows, a notable rise from just a quarter (24%) in 2023. However, despite these advancements, concerns remain prevalent among this group. A striking 74% of administrators expressed worries regarding privacy and accuracy, while 58% cited fears about losing control, and 55% were apprehensive about the associated costs. Additionally, 24% reported anxiety about potential job displacement due to increased automation.
In summary, while AI and automation have not yet transformed IT and security practices to the anticipated extent, the landscape is evolving. System administrators are taking a more measured approach to AI implementation, recognizing both its advantages and limitations. As they continue to adapt to these technologies, the complex interplay between human expertise and machine intelligence will likely define the future of IT workflows. The findings from Action1’s survey underscore the necessity for ongoing dialogue about AI’s role in the workplace, ensuring that its integration is both effective and aligned with the overarching goals of security and operational integrity.
