Two suspects have been captured by authorities for mail theft after utilizing an AirTag locator device to trace their whereabouts.

The incident took place on August 19, 2024, when deputies from the Los Alamos Post Office responded to a report of theft. The swift use of modern technology in this case sheds light on the potential for such devices in preventing crimes and underscores the importance of community watchfulness.

The victim in this case, who had been a target of mail theft on previous occasions, devised a clever plan to catch the culprits behind the theft. She ingeniously mailed herself a package containing an AirTag, a small tracking device created by Apple to assist in locating lost items. Therefore, when her mail was once again stolen, along with the package containing the AirTag, she was able to track its location.

Significantly, the victim refrained from taking matters into her own hands and confronting the suspects directly. Instead, she opted to involve law enforcement in apprehending the culprits responsible for the theft.

The two suspects apprehended were identified as 27-year-old Virginia Franchessca Lara from Santa Maria and 37-year-old Donald Ashton Terry from Riverside. They were found in possession of the victim’s stolen mail, which included the package with the AirTag, as well as items believed to have been stolen from numerous other victims.

Lara is facing several felony charges, including possession of fraudulent checks, identity theft, credit card theft, and conspiracy. She is currently being detained at the Northern Branch Jail with bail set at $50,000. On the other hand, Terry is also facing multiple felony charges, including burglary and identity theft, in addition to theft-related warrants from Riverside County. His bail has been set at $460,000.

The Sheriff’s Office commended the victim for her proactive approach in utilizing technology to aid in the investigation and apprehension of the suspects. They emphasized the importance of contacting law enforcement in such cases rather than taking matters into one’s own hands.
