Major Cloud Buildout Driven by Akamai’s Contract with Anthropic

Akamai Expands Cloud Capabilities with .6B Anthropic Acquisition Over 7 Years

Akamai Technologies has officially sealed the most significant agreement in its nearly three-decade history, securing an astounding $11.6 billion seven-year deal with Anthropic, an AI lab based in San Francisco. This landmark contract will primarily focus on providing cloud infrastructure services that support accelerating CPU workloads—a pressing demand in today’s technology landscape.

Anthropic, which is well-recognized in the frontier AI sector, chose Akamai’s advanced distributed AI infrastructure and software solutions to construct and operate a large-scale AI framework. The announcement made on Thursday outlined potential expansion of the original agreement by another $9 billion, indicating a substantial future development that will commence in 2026. Revenue generation from this partnership is slated to start in the latter half of 2027, marking a significant milestone for both entities.

Highlighting the partnership’s implications, Akamai co-founder and CEO Tom Leighton emphasized their commitment to becoming the integral cloud provider for an AI-driven world. “We’ve made Akamai the cloud company that powers and protects an AI-driven world,” Leighton stated during an investor call. He elaborated on how Akamai’s cloud platform extends robust, high-performance computing capabilities from its core to the edges, allowing organizations to develop and scale next-generation AI applications effectively.

The market has reacted positively to this historic contract, with Akamai’s stock increasing by 4.92%, reflecting confidence from investors. This growth has surged the stock price to $115.84, affirming strong market validation of the Akamai-Anthropic relationship. Interestingly, this recent contract follows a prior agreement from earlier in 2026, where Anthropic and Akamai committed to a $2.8 billion multi-year engagement for cloud infrastructure services. It’s noteworthy that this deal does not restrict Akamai from collaborating with other competitors of Anthropic; the firm is known to work concurrently with other prominent AI enterprises.

Akamai’s Strategic Financial Commitments

To meet the obligations of this expansive partnership, Akamai plans to invest approximately $5.5 billion in the next two years. This figure not only supports the ongoing commitment but also incorporates the preliminary acquisition of memory and necessary infrastructure. CFO Ed McGowan pointed out that the additional $9 billion is structured as an option, underscoring that it is not contingent on specific deliverables or milestones tied to the initial $11.6 billion agreement. The expectation is that while fulfilling this commitment, Akamai will also engage with other large-scale AI clients, highlighting increased interest from companies that previously did not view Akamai as a viable player at such a scale.

McGowan shared, “You do find that folks will contact us that may not have worked with us in the past and say, ‘I didn’t know you could work at that scale. I would love to sit down and have a conversation about doing something larger than we had ever contemplated doing with you.’” This reflects a cycle of growing interest and opportunities for the company, as other potential clients recognize Akamai’s capabilities.

The anticipated revenue from this partnership is expected to start generating between $150 million to $300 million by the end of 2027 and reach full capacity by the close of 2028, potentially leading to an annualized revenue run rate reaching approximately $1.7 billion thereafter. The financial architecture of the agreement ensures stability, as it features a take-or-pay structure that guarantees Akamai will receive payment upon delivery of services, thereby ensuring steady revenue flow throughout the contract’s duration.

In projections of Akamai’s cloud infrastructure, signed contracts are predicted to bring about $2.2 billion in annual recurring revenue, all while requiring an estimated 95 to 105 megawatts of power. Each megawatt is expected to yield around $22 million in associated revenue across Akamai’s existing portfolio. Rather than constructing its own data centers, Akamai is strategically opting to utilize colocation providers, with a portion of the necessary capacity already secured.

“Akamai is very good at scale,” added Leighton, highlighting the company’s robust operational capabilities. The firm emphasizes its ability to manage vast volumes of data and security functions, as evidenced by its extensive client base among major enterprises and a robust traffic footprint.

Future Plans for Akamai’s Cloud Ecosystem

The latest arrangement is focused exclusively on CPU workloads; however, Akamai’s broader portfolio with Anthropic, valued at $14.4 billion, indicates a balanced approach that encompasses both CPU and GPU operational demands. CFO McGowan noted that CPU workloads are particularly efficient from a revenue generation standpoint due to power consumption advantages, while the need for GPU capabilities will also grow as demand expands.

Following its acquisition of Linode, Akamai has fortified its compute and storage infrastructure, developing what is referred to as Akamai Cloud. This platform is already being utilized for a diverse range of applications including conversational voice agents, translation services, speech recognition, image generation, and more. Akamai’s offerings are designed to deliver low latency, scalability, and distributed system reliability, making them a competitive player in the evolving AI landscape.

Looking ahead, Akamai is poised to enhance its cloud platform further by diversifying hardware, augmenting capacity, and introducing features such as agent sandboxing, AI gateways, and intelligent orchestration. As outlined by Leighton, the goal remains to optimize workload management on efficient hardware that minimizes latency and installation time.

In conclusion, Akamai’s strategic partnership with Anthropic represents a significant leap in the competitive cloud infrastructure market, aligning with the technological trajectory towards AI. The developments anticipated from this collaboration will not only benefit the two companies but also revolutionize the manner in which cloud services are delivered across the AI sector.
