As artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) continue to be integrated into various business operations, the issue of security has become increasingly important, especially in the realm of zero-day vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities, which are previously unknown security flaws that are exploited before developers can address them, present significant risks in traditional software environments. However, as AI and ML technologies become more prevalent, a new concern emerges: What do zero-day vulnerabilities look like in AI/ML systems, and how do they differ from traditional contexts?

Defining Zero-Day Vulnerabilities in AI

The concept of an “AI zero-day” is still relatively new, and there is no consensus in the cybersecurity industry about an exact definition. Typically, a zero-day vulnerability refers to a flaw that is exploited before it is known to the software maker. In the case of AI, these vulnerabilities often resemble those found in standard web applications or APIs, as these are the interfaces through which most AI systems interact with users and data.

However, AI systems introduce an additional layer of complexity and potential risk. AI-specific vulnerabilities could include issues like prompt injection. For example, if an AI system summarizes an email, an attacker could inject a prompt in the email before sending it, causing the AI to return harmful responses. Another unique zero-day threat in AI systems is training data leakage, where attackers can exploit crafted inputs to extract samples from the training data, potentially including sensitive information or intellectual property. These types of attacks take advantage of the unique nature of AI systems that learn and respond to user-generated inputs in ways traditional software systems do not.

Current Challenges in AI Security

AI development often prioritizes speed and innovation over security, leading to an ecosystem where AI applications and their underlying infrastructures are built without robust security measures. Additionally, many AI engineers may not be security experts, further complicating the issue. As a result, AI/ML tooling often lacks the stringent security measures that are standard in other areas of software development.

Research conducted by the Huntr AI/ML bug bounty community has revealed that vulnerabilities in AI/ML tooling are common and can differ from those found in more traditional web environments built with current security best practices.

Challenges and Recommendations for Security Teams

While the challenges of AI zero-days are still emerging, security teams can follow traditional security best practices adapted to the AI context. Several key recommendations include adopting MLSecOps, integrating security practices throughout the ML life cycle, performing proactive security audits, and using automated security tools to scan AI tools and infrastructure for vulnerabilities.

As AI technology continues to advance, the complexity of security threats will increase, and attackers will become more inventive. Security teams must adapt to these changes by incorporating AI-specific considerations into their cybersecurity strategies. The discussion about AI zero-days is just beginning, and the security community must continue to develop and refine best practices in response to these evolving threats.
