CHENNAI: The recent operation to capture an ATM heist gang in Namakkal, aided by a tip-off from the Kerala Police, has prompted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to advocate for enhanced coordination between police forces across state boundaries. The chief minister highlighted the escalating threat of inter-state crimes such as narcotics smuggling and cybercrime, underscoring the necessity for collaborative efforts to bolster public safety and disrupt criminal networks.

Stalin commended both the Tamil Nadu and Kerala Police for their prompt action in apprehending the gang, which had been involved in similar thefts across various locations in Kerala before fleeing to Thrissur. He emphasized that this successful operation exemplifies the level of coordination and proactive measures that need to be promoted through conferences like the Southern Regional Police Coordination Committee (SRPCC) meeting.

Speaking at the SRPCC meeting, Stalin drew attention to the complexities of cybercrime and stressed the importance of inter-state cooperation in combating this evolving threat. He noted that while Tamil Nadu has been proactive in addressing cybercrime complaints, apprehending cybercriminals often requires cross-border police operations, presenting significant challenges. In 2023 alone, 1,390 cases in Tamil Nadu involved criminals from other states, many of whom were ultimately caught within the state.

The chief minister also expressed concerns about the rise of “cyber slavery,” where young individuals are exploited and coerced into engaging in cybercrimes. He emphasized the critical need to strengthen coordinated efforts to address these emerging threats and protect the state’s youth from such exploitation.

In addition to cybercrime, Stalin outlined Tamil Nadu’s comprehensive approach to combatting the sale and distribution of ganja. He highlighted the state’s enforcement measures, including asset seizures, freezing of bank accounts, property sealing, imposing heavy fines, and advocating for severe punishments for offenders. The state also prioritizes awareness campaigns, particularly targeted at educational institutions, to prevent drug use among youth.

Stalin underscored the importance of leveraging modern technology, such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems, advanced cameras, and other surveillance tools at border check posts to detect smuggled goods, illegal vehicles, and criminals. The chief minister emphasized the necessity for embracing these technological advancements to enhance law enforcement and ensure the security of the state’s borders.

The SRPCC meeting was attended by senior police officers, including Tamil Nadu’s Additional Chief Secretary of Home Dheeraj Kumar, Tamil Nadu DGP Shankar Jiwal, Karnataka’s DGP Alok Mohan, Kerala’s DGP Shaik Darvesh Saheb, Shalini Singh from Puducherry, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao from Andhra Pradesh, and officers from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Following the inauguration of the event, the officers visited key landmarks in the city, including the Kalaignar Centenary Park and the Kalaignar Memorial.

Overall, the SRPCC meeting served as a platform for important discussions on enhancing inter-state police cooperation, particularly in tackling cybercrime and combating the sale of illegal substances. Chief Minister Stalin’s call for unified efforts and proactive measures underscores the significance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies to safeguard public security and dismantle criminal networks operating across state borders.
