The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping societies and economies around the world. This transformative technology has also become a significant factor in geopolitics, with malicious actors exploiting AI capabilities to spread misinformation and potentially develop autonomous weapons. In this context, bridging the “AI divide” between countries of the Global North and South is essential for ensuring equal representation, addressing regulatory concerns, and promoting the equitable distribution of AI benefits.

Many G20 member countries have already established comprehensive national AI strategies, with leading technology powerhouses like the United States, United Kingdom, China, and the European Union taking the lead. Despite economic constraints, Global South nations such as Brazil, Argentina, and India are making progress in leveraging AI in various sectors, including social services and agriculture. However, future strategies need to anticipate emerging threats like Generative AI (GenAI) and Quantum AI, prioritizing responsible governance to address biases, inequalities, and cybersecurity risks.

The G20 serves as a critical platform for countries to come together and collectively address the challenges posed by AI. The recent inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 in 2023 highlights efforts to promote inclusivity and diversity in AI discussions. The New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, which emphasizes harnessing AI responsibly, showcases a commitment to accountability, transparency, and ethical governance of AI technologies.

With AI continuing to revolutionize industries and impact societies, collaborative efforts among nations are vital for navigating the ethical, regulatory, and geopolitical complexities associated with AI. By prioritizing responsible AI governance and inclusive decision-making processes, countries can harness the potential of AI for the collective good while also mitigating potential risks.

In conclusion, the G20 and similar forums play a significant role in facilitating international cooperation on AI-related issues. As AI technologies become more pervasive and influential, it is crucial for countries to work together to ensure that AI is developed and utilized in a responsible and ethical manner that benefits all of humanity.
