CISA, in partnership with various local agencies and organizations, recently organized an extensive active shooter exercise in Fauquier County aimed at fortifying the safety and security measures within K-12 educational institutions. The exercise took place at Kettle Run High School and Greenville Elementary School on June 27, with the primary objective being to assess and enhance emergency response strategies in simulated active shooter scenarios.

The collaborative effort involved a wide array of participants, including law enforcement personnel, school administrators, teachers, and emergency medical services. These key stakeholders played essential roles in evaluating the effectiveness of existing safety protocols, particularly in scenarios involving simulated injuries, evacuations, and the reunification of students with their families.

David Mussington, CISA’s Executive Assistant Director for Infrastructure Security, emphasized the significance of conducting K-12 active shooter exercises to nurture cooperation among federal, state, and local entities in safeguarding educational environments. Such initiatives are deemed crucial for empowering communities to respond efficiently to potential threats.

Sheriff Jeremy Falls underscored the exercise’s role in enhancing preparedness for real-world incidents, emphasizing the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. The exercise provided valuable insights into their readiness levels and identified areas for further strengthening their response capabilities.

Dr. Major Warner, superintendent of Fauquier County Public Schools, highlighted the partnership’s role in bolstering school safety measures, stating that testing emergency protocols has significantly enhanced their readiness as a school division, thereby creating a safer learning environment for students and staff.

Aside from evaluating emergency response strategies, the exercise also sought to assess the speed and coordination of law enforcement responses, emergency medical operations, and communication between agencies during crises. Chief Kalvyn Smith of the Fauquier County Fire Rescue System emphasized the importance of collaborative training exercises in preparing agencies to effectively protect and serve the community.

Janelle Downes, Fauquier County Administrator, stressed the necessity of involving various stakeholders in such exercises, emphasizing that coordinated responses are imperative during large-scale critical incidents. This exercise provided an opportunity to plan and refine coordination efforts for potential future emergencies.

Bill Ryan, CISA’s Regional Director, highlighted the value of these exercises in pinpointing strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring continuous learning and adaptation to maintain readiness levels. CISA remains dedicated to supporting local communities through training and collaborative initiatives aimed at enhancing security measures, with the exercise in Fauquier County representing a significant stride in these ongoing efforts to safeguard schools and foster community resilience.
