In a recent development, city police in Bhubaneswar successfully dismantled a cybercrime racket operating under the guise of a call center in Sundarpada. The law enforcement authorities apprehended six individuals involved in the illicit activities. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the cybercrime syndicate operated by utilizing multiple SIM box devices to facilitate their illegal operations.

DCP Pinak Mishra shed light on the modus operandi of the fraudulent scheme, stating, “Upon inspecting the premises, it became evident that the call center was a front for nefarious activities. Our team conducted a raid and uncovered that the six suspects were engaged in making calls to and receiving calls from the United States using laptops and mobile phones.” The individuals in custody have been identified as Sameer Mobin, Md Javed Hussain, Md Tosif, Alam, Sueb Raza, and Md Haider Ali, all hailing from Kolkata.

The cyber fraudsters employed the tactic of e-mail bombarding, utilizing Norton and McAfee anti-virus software for phishing purposes. By sending deceptive emails to unsuspecting victims posing as employees of McAfee and Norton customer care, the perpetrators tricked individuals into believing they were seeking assistance. When the victims dialed the toll-free number provided in the emails, the calls were redirected to Skype call and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, enabling the criminals to remotely access and take control of the victims’ systems, subsequently compromising sensitive data.

During the raid, law enforcement seized six laptops, 11 mobile phones, as well as various incriminating documents and materials such as fiber cables, Wi-Fi setups, routers, and towers. The suspects have been charged under multiple sections of the BNS Act and the IT Act to ensure accountability for their unlawful actions.
