In a digital age where technology is integrated into almost every aspect of our lives, schools and libraries are not exempt from the growing threats of cyberattacks. Statistics from the Center for Internet Security reveal that 29% of K-12 schools in the United States have fallen victim to cyberattacks, highlighting the severity of the issue that public institutions face in ensuring cybersecurity.

To shed light on the challenges and importance of cybersecurity in school districts, Johnathan Kim, the director of technology at Woodland Hills School District in North Braddock, Penn., shared his insights in a recent interview with Dark Reading. Kim emphasized the lack of dedicated cybersecurity personnel in schools, leaving staff to juggle multiple responsibilities without specialized training or resources. This gap in expertise makes educational institutions an easy target for cybercriminals who seek to exploit vulnerabilities in their systems.

With limited staffing and budget constraints, schools struggle to implement robust cybersecurity measures, making them susceptible to attacks aimed at retrieving sensitive information like financial data and personal identifiable information of students and staff. Kim pointed out the inherent vulnerabilities in school environments, where the focus is often on educational outcomes rather than cybersecurity protocols, leaving gaps that cyber attackers can exploit.

Kim’s experience at Woodland Hills School District highlighted the impact of cyber threats on educational institutions. He shared a firsthand account of a cyberattack that targeted the district, compromising critical systems and causing disruption to daily operations. The incident underscored the importance of proactively addressing cybersecurity gaps to prevent future breaches and safeguard sensitive data from malicious actors.

Upon taking on his role at Woodland Hills, Kim prioritized enhancing the district’s cybersecurity posture by implementing two-factor authentication and restricting staff’s local admin rights on computers. These proactive measures aimed to strengthen the school’s defenses against potential cyber threats and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information. By prioritizing security protocols and implementing best practices, Kim worked towards creating a more secure digital environment for students and staff.

In offering advice to others working in cybersecurity for school districts, Kim stressed the importance of balancing security measures with effective communication and education. Acknowledging the challenges of implementing sweeping changes in educational settings, he highlighted the need to justify security decisions to staff members who may not be well-versed in technology. By explaining the rationale behind security protocols and emphasizing their personal benefits, cybersecurity professionals can foster a culture of security awareness within schools.

Furthermore, Kim advocated for continuous education and professional development in cybersecurity, noting the importance of staying ahead of evolving threats and technologies. While school districts may lack the resources for extensive training programs, he encouraged cybersecurity professionals to seek out available resources and certifications to enhance their knowledge and skills in safeguarding educational institutions against cyber threats.

As the landscape of cybersecurity continues to evolve, the need for vigilance and proactive measures in schools and libraries becomes increasingly critical. By recognizing the unique challenges and vulnerabilities facing educational institutions, cybersecurity professionals can work towards establishing secure digital environments that protect sensitive data and promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness among students, staff, and stakeholders.
