A recent report released by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has shed light on the concerning practices of large social media and video streaming companies. The report states that these companies are operating a pervasive surveillance system that intrudes on the privacy of both users and non-users, with little to no internal regulations in place for data collection, storage, and sale.

The FTC report, based on orders for information sent to nine major platforms including Meta, Amazon, X, Snap, YouTube, and ByteDance, covers the companies’ practices between 2019 and 2020. While the orders were sent in 2020, the agency highlighted that many of the problematic behaviors are still in use today.

One of the key focuses of the report is how these companies’ data practices impact the privacy of children and teenagers. The report suggests that these practices might be in violation of existing laws, including the agency’s rule protecting the digital privacy of minors and Section 5 of the FTC Act, which prohibits misleading consumers.

The report reveals that these companies collect vast amounts of personal data from Americans and monetize it extensively, generating billions of dollars in revenue annually. FTC Chair Lina Khan emphasized the timely nature of these findings, especially as lawmakers are considering legislation to protect individuals from exploitative data practices.

Furthermore, the report highlights how these companies store and combine data from various sources, including data brokers, leading to privacy breaches and potential risks such as stalking and identity theft for some users. The lack of proper data handling mechanisms and oversight means that user data is often kept indefinitely and shared with other companies, enabling extensive tracking of consumer behavior.

Additionally, the report points out that these companies deploy tracking technologies to enhance targeted advertising, with users having limited to no control over how their data is used. The inadequate protections for children and teens are especially concerning, as many companies fail to differentiate how minors use their platforms compared to adult users.

The FTC report makes several recommendations to address these issues, including urging Congress to pass comprehensive federal privacy legislation. It also calls for reforms within the companies themselves, such as minimizing data collection, ceasing the sharing of data with third parties, allowing users to control data usage by algorithms, and improving transparency regarding data practices.

In conclusion, the FTC report serves as a wake-up call to the need for stronger regulations and oversight in the digital landscape. It highlights the urgent need to protect consumer privacy, especially vulnerable groups like children and teenagers, from the intrusive and exploitative practices of big tech companies.
