American insurance giant Globe Life is currently dealing with a cyber incident where hackers stole data on over 5,000 individuals from one of its subsidiaries. This breach has prompted the insurance company to inform the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and reach out to federal law enforcement for assistance in handling the situation.

In a recent SEC filing, Globe Life revealed that the stolen data may involve certain customers and customer leads linked to its subsidiary, American Income Life Insurance Company. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, with the company expressing concerns about the potential impact on affected individuals.

Globe Life, known for reporting $5.21 billion in revenue last year, has a substantial customer base through its subsidiary American Income Life Insurance Company. With over 4 million policyholders, the subsidiary generates approximately $297 million in life insurance premium sales annually.

The compromised data includes sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, names, addresses, and health-related details. Although the extent of the breach is not fully verified, Globe Life has assured that no sensitive financial data like credit card information or banking details were part of the stolen information.

According to the filing, the hackers have shared some of the stolen data with short sellers and attorneys involved in legal proceedings. They have also claimed to possess additional information that has yet to be confirmed. However, Globe Life emphasized that the cyber incident did not involve ransomware and did not disrupt its operations.

This breach comes on the heels of earlier allegations made against Globe Life regarding potential vulnerabilities in access permissions and user identity management for a company web portal. These allegations raised concerns about unauthorized access to customer and policyholder records, adding to the company’s existing challenges.

In June, Globe Life faced scrutiny and financial setbacks amidst accusations of fraudulent sales tactics and other questionable business practices. Allegations included insurance fraud, policy framing for deceased and fictitious individuals, unauthorized fund withdrawals, unfair dismissals, deceptive sales strategies, and illegal kickbacks. Some of American Income Life’s top agents were also accused of serious crimes like kidnapping, assault, and child grooming.

Following the breach, Globe Life has taken steps to address the situation by hiring cybersecurity experts to investigate and implement corrective measures. The company remains focused on resolving the breach and ensuring the security of its customers’ information.

As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, Globe Life is working diligently to enhance its data protection measures and restore trust among its policyholders. The company’s response to the cyber incident will be closely monitored as details emerge and efforts are made to prevent similar breaches in the future.
