Security experts have recently unveiled concerning vulnerabilities in industrial gas chromatographs produced by Emerson Rosemount, raising alarms about the potential risks these flaws pose to critical operations and sensitive data. These vulnerabilities, if exploited, could grant unauthorized access, disrupt operations, and allow for the execution of arbitrary commands.

Gas chromatographs are essential tools in various industries, such as environmental monitoring, healthcare, and food processing, where they are used to analyze chemical compounds accurately and ensure the safety of the environment, patients, and consumers.

The flaws identified in Emerson Rosemount gas chromatographs by operational technology security firm Claroty consist of two command injection vulnerabilities and two authentication bypass issues. To investigate the vulnerabilities in Emerson Rosemount 370XA gas chromatographs, which are commonly deployed in industrial settings for gas analysis, researchers conducted an emulation of the systems due to the high cost of the physical device. The emulation process involved extracting the device firmware from the official Emerson Rosemount website and using the QEMU emulator to run the firmware on the gas chromatograph’s PowerPC architecture. Through this process, researchers were able to pinpoint four critical vulnerabilities:

– CVE-2023-46687: Remote execution of root-level commands without authentication
– CVE-2023-49716: Remote execution of arbitrary commands by authenticated users
– CVE-2023-51761: Authentication bypass enabling admin access by resetting passwords
– CVE-2023-43609: Unauthenticated access to sensitive information or denial-of-service

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued an advisory cautioning about the potential consequences of successful attacks on these vulnerabilities, which could lead to denial-of-service conditions and unauthorized access to systems running affected models like GC370XA, GC700XA, and GC1500XA with firmware versions 4.1.5 and earlier.

The impact of compromised gas chromatographs in various sectors is significant, with potential disruptions in food processing affecting bacteria detection accuracy and halting production, while disruptions in healthcare settings could impact patient care due to inaccurate blood sample analysis.
