Last week, TechnologyOne, an Australian enterprise software company, revealed that it had been the victim of an internal data breach. The company, which provides software solutions to a range of industries including government and education, confirmed that a former employee had accessed a significant amount of confidential data which they then uploaded onto a personal computer.

In a statement released by TechnologyOne, the company’s founder and CEO, Adrian Di Marco, said that the breach was discovered during a security audit in September of this year. Di Marco also revealed that TechnologyOne had liaised with law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter and that the former employee had been questioned and had subsequently “departed the company”.

Whilst the breach is being described as an internal one, that hasn’t stopped customers and competitors alike from speculating on the impacts of the breach and the wider implications of data security for companies that rely heavily on technology.

One of TechnologyOne’s competitors, Oracle, was quick to issue a statement following the news of the breach. In an interview with Bloomberg, Oracle’s CEO, Larry Ellison, said that for companies like TechnologyOne, “you can’t escape your own echo”. Ellison argued that as more companies move towards cloud-based technology services, the potential for breaches like the one suffered by TechnologyOne increase.

The breach has also raised questions about the effectiveness of data protection measures put in place by companies. Whilst TechnologyOne has not released any details about the data that was accessed or the potential damages, customers and commentators have speculated about the types of data that may have been breached. Given the company’s exposure to government and education industries, it’s likely that sensitive information about individuals could have been compromised.

This latest breach is by no means the first breach to occur in the technology industry. In fact, a decade-long breach of Toyota, the automotive manufacturer, was only recently publicised. The breach, which occurred in Japan, saw the data of over 2 million vehicles being compromised.

The impact of both the TechnologyOne and Toyota breaches highlights the importance of companies regularly reviewing their data security measures. The increasing reliance on technology by businesses of all sizes and industries, means that breaches are becoming more common. Companies must take steps to protect their data and review their security measures regularly to ensure that they are up to date with current threats.

Whilst details of the TechnologyOne breach are yet to fully emerge, the breach serves as a reminder that companies need to be vigilant and proactive about security measures. As more companies move towards cloud-based technology services, the risks of breaches occurring increase. As a result, companies must ensure that their data is protected and that security measures are reviewed and updated regularly. Failure to do so could result in significant damage to businesses and individuals.
