The importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of government and military applications cannot be overstated, especially as the US Government continues to prioritize its integration into various aspects of national security. This was underscored by an executive order issued by the White House in October 2023, which outlined the need for safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of AI.

One of the key agencies responsible for executing this executive order is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). CISA has developed an AI roadmap that outlines the actions it will take to support the adoption of AI in critical infrastructure. This roadmap emphasizes the importance of identifying risks specific to the context of various industries, such as healthcare, energy, and IT, and working with industry experts to address these risks.

In response to the executive order, several government agencies have appointed chief AI officers to oversee the integration of AI within their respective agencies. These officers are tasked with promoting AI innovation while also managing the potential risks associated with its use. Lisa Einstein, a senior advisor for AI at CISA, highlighted the critical role of these AI champions in understanding both the positive and negative implications of integrating AI into everyday applications.

One such example is the Department of Homeland Security’s Chief AI Officer, Eric Hysen, who also serves as the agency’s CIO. Hysen is responsible for coordinating AI efforts across various DHS components, including the Transportation Security Administration, which uses AI to detect prohibited items in luggage. The use of AI is not limited to security measures at ports of entry and along the border but also extends into cyberspace to protect against cyber threats and combat the potential misuse of AI.

As the landscape of AI-related threats continues to evolve, there is a growing need for innovative AI-enabled tools and techniques to combat them effectively. This includes leveraging AI for penetration testing, red teaming, threat intelligence, anomaly detection, and incident response to mitigate the risks associated with the malicious use of AI.

In conclusion, the implementation of AI within the US Government and its various agencies has become a top priority, especially in the context of national security. The appointment of chief AI officers and the development of AI roadmaps and strategies underscore the commitment to leveraging AI while managing the associated risks. As AI continues to evolve, so too must the measures in place to defend against potential threats, ultimately ensuring the safe and secure use of AI.
